I've been a big fan of the Cold Steel Special Forces shovel for some time:It's small enough to hang from a pack, strap to the side of a kayak or canoe or simply keep in the trunk of your car for times when you need it. The handle is solid and replaceable if necessary, and the steel is Cold Steel's Carbon V so you can put an edge on it to use it as a makeshift axe if need be.I have one of Glock's bayonets that I found yesterday along with that silly Stab in the Dark knife. I thought I had sold or traded it as well- it's funny that you should have brought it up today of all days!DefI believe that I was told somewhere that Cold steels design was replicated from a Russian Spetnatz design . It was/is also called a throwing shovel much as a throwing knife . I do not think that I would want to be on the receiving end of this item .

It is indeed copied from the SPETZNAZ design. I have met (and trained for a short period of timewith) Vladimir Vasiliev of the SPETZNAZ and while the shovel could be an impressive weapon, there are very few things (if anything) that isn't an imposing weapon in the hands of a trained SPETZNAZ officer! The man can kick all of our arses with little more than the lint in his pocket!Def
Good kit spoils a soldier! If a soldier has to repair his gear while under fire, it build character! Def
