On The Necessity of Change and Decisions
on: September 08, 2011, 01:52:13 AM
I stand faced with a quandary, for which I seek sage advice from those I trust most in such matters. Please bear with me as I give reason for my dilemma.

I started my adventure in Coreville with two goals in mind:
  • To gather enough in order to complete my photo
  • Because it was my favorite tool, and I wanted enough to hopefully last my lifetime.
The first part is now complete, but the second part has apparently become unnecessary. :o

Why? It’s because, over the last while I have found the ST300 to be a worthy and acceptable replacement to the Core. :ahhh I know, I know, who would have ever had thought they would hear me say that. It’s hard for me to believe it. Without doubt, it has been quite a arduous process for me to even reach this epiphany.

But nevertheless, it is what it is, and it leaves me with quite a predicament. What does a fella do with almost 30 Cores, when he only needs a few shelf Queens for sentimental and collecting purposes? Can I actually bring myself to start selling them off? Difficult questions indeed.

Anyway, while it hasn’t been written in stone yet, more than likely the ST300 will become my tool of choice. I have no intention of amassing them, since they are currently in production, and I have no real desire to spell “Super Tool 300” (at least not at this point ;)). So I'm only going to be aiming for a dozen or so, just to keep them scattered around in the places I like to have an MT handy, and as well a few backups.

So what do you all think?

I think you should give one (to me) ahem...i mean in a giveaway just to see if you can handle the separation.  If you end up on oxygen from hyperventilating, then keep the rest of your collection. :D

Well what I would do is set enough aside that you have a modest amount. Then sell some here to fuel some future project, keeping in mind that everyone here loves multis and would care for them as you would. Knowing that by selling some that would be giving some other people the chance to know what it's like to have and own one.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Keep a few, just because they will always be useful, and sell the rest here or on Ebay for a decent chunk to go towards your ST300 pile.  I would love a good Core, I would buy one from you.  I'm sure you would have no issues selling a few here.

As for the difficulty of the decision, I happen to be the most wishy washy person in the world when it comes to MT's.  I was DEAD SET on a Powerlock one time, even told my wife that I didn't see the need to buy too many more because I was so convinced the versatility of the PL would get me by.  It lasted a week at best, and I was done with it for various reasons.  I then bought two more a month later.  They have since been sold.

I have been in a whirlwind of Blast/Everything else rotation for two years.  The blast absolutely fits me best for EDC, but I get bored with it and have to go a while trying new tools.  I get where you are coming from, but at least you have the ability to hang on to 30 of the same tool without selling them off to get new tools all the time.  I don't think this was helpful, but I tried!  Good luck Paul!

Almost bought a Core till I saw the $89 sticker on it. Wanted it as it reminded me a lot of my original Super Tool. Sadly the wallet is the end persuasion ... or the end result.

Keep them. Give to your mates, or your relations that are respectful of you.

I have given a couple of PST away to younglings (over 18, under 25) who desperately needed to know what a multitool was to perform daily tasks better.
Gave a KF4 to a fellow that helped me with computer parts over the years, and usually had a shoulder to listen. And recently a ST300 to another friend that I met through beta testing with Symantec. We saw each other for the first time last week, and he came all the way from Arkansas. Charlie got a special ST300, one that I posted fairly recently. He helped me in my father's passing.
Gave or passed down tools to my Mom, which she still carried my replaced PST.

Keep 3, find homes for the others - or sell them. If I had the money I'd try and make you an offer. Core is between 2 legendary tools, and a legend in its own right.

A quandry indeed. You've spent a lot of money and time collecting these items ... but it was fun, right?

I cannot tell you what to do with your tools, merely tell you what I have tried to do with mine. My second full size MT was a Swisstool CS Plus, and I knew it was perfect for me - much like you did with the Core and ST300. However since then I've continued to try different tools from different manufacturers and have found various different items and combinations of items which work for me in different areas of my life - often tools which I thought would work didn't, and they've had to go. Likewise I've bought tools which I wasn't convinced would work for me and they're now keepers, not just in a drawer but as a part of my life.

The reason I say this is I'd hate for you to rack up your first couple of dozen ST300's before realizing you were back in the same quandry again  :P :D :D I'd let most of the Cores go myself, keeping a couple of users and possibly a couple of Queens. By all means use some of the funds gained to grab a spare ST300 or two, but then explore what else is out there ... you never know how it'll work for you till you try it  :tu:

Thanks for the replies, everyone

It has been a great deal of fun over the years collecting them :tu: And with all this good advice, I have come up with some tentative ideas.

First, I know which ones I'm for sure going to keep until my estate sale ;) And that's these:
  • 1 BO
  • 1 BO CC
  • 2 SS
  • 1 NATO SS (don't actually have this one yet, but when I get the opportunity... :dd:)
Second, I do have a great desire to give some away, but not all. Because, as I have purchased them through the years, I did not ignore the investment aspect. So here's my plan for this:
  • Give one or a few away in contests
  • Make some the part of some very equitable trades (this has actually already begun)
  • And before I start listing them on eBay, or EDC Source, I'm going to offer them here for sale to fellow members at an obscenely low price  :D
