I put it in a vise and tried a test cut nearer the end with a grinder and a very thin cut off disc.
However it heated up too fast for the amount of time I had.
So I finished off the test cut with a hacksaw which worked well.
Using the hacksaw again I cut off another section.
Cleaned up the rough bits and edges with a smurf file, then a mill file.
Gave it a quick sanding and took some pics, all finished within an hour.
By taking your time and doing it by hand I doubt you'll create enough heat to cause any damage.

So the hacksaw did cut through the plier head in satisfactory time? I was afraid I would be sawing and sawing until I grew grey and old...

I guess sometimes a hands on test will tell you more than research. ;-)
I´ll give it a go at one of my Wingman/sidekicks.

Thanks for the feedback and congrats on a nice mod!

I was happy with the speed of the cut.
Let the saw do the work and take your time, keeps the work cool and cut tidy.
You'll be right.

I really wish MT companies would make an optional blunt nose plier head for their tools.

Or, if they specifically designed a BN tool, doesn't that open up more room in the body of the tool for larger implements? That would be nice.

So the Small Bit Driver went to the Core to wait for next time.

Onto the Surge.

The pushed out side.

Awl survives for now.

The pushed in side.

Both sides of the story.

And fully closed. Round one done. Who wants to hear my outside Awl plan?

And... has there been a revamp of the Surge as of yet?   ???

It served well for a couple years and then I picked up the newer version.

I think months later some of it was parted.

And the new version born.

Came across this pic while looking for the others. Some have gone on to better homes. They are missed.

Like the new pliers idea, being snubbed and all. What did you do to keep the black oxide from burning up?

Still have the old Surge. Don't know what I could possibly do to it to get ir replaced factory wide to a newer version. One Surge is enough, especially for the the weight! Wouldn't want to buy another one unless it was a Mini-Surge-like in a Charge model or something. Of course once taking the pliers down the warranty is out the roof anyhow.

My First Crunch was way better than the replacement I was sent. Stupid me tried to cut the final area of a stuck stainless steel link, and my heart fell when the Crunch head broke. It did go in a "soft crunch" ... and I'm here crying, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

It's replacement doesn't stay shut, the spring keeps disengaging and making it harder to deploy. Slowly trying to get used to it, though I don't hardly use it as much as I once did living on a mountain farm next to a river. It was my "go to" for priming the river pumps, getting the junk out of the river strainers, and other things. The good times.  8)

I didn't give it any special treatment.

I got mine pre loved. It was also a little off and didn't stay shut etc. Hammer and nail punch took care of that though.

Destructo Field Tool DXT-009601.

It's for skaters.

Also comes with an allen/phillips bit not shown in the pics.

  I like it. :D

Only issue I have with the Surge, least on mine, is that blade exchanger thing. Perhaps it's only on the BO versions? The older thin metal that's supposed to stay snapped over the tool holder ... that thing tends to stay in the channel when opening up. Either that or the dimple gets worn and won't stay closed.

Would so like to have an  moment to have the blade exchanger and pliers head switched to the newer version. Thing is these Surge are like indestructible!

Noooo! Now I'll never be able to look at my old reliable Surge without thinking "I should mod this like Zoidberg's". ;)
Remember looks are not everything.

IMO, re the cutters on the different plier heads after using the Surge for months and the ST3 for weeks. Both can cut a nail in half, the ST3 will need more hand power to shear/tear through and the Surge will cut through with ease/less effort. Plier heads were tested on both sets of handles with the same results. I found that the Surge handles are more comfy and the ruler markings felt good.

I tend to carry both tools. If the job looks tool abusive I'll use the ST3 head as I can replace the cutters, otherwise I go with the Surge head for less stress on my hands.

Damn you all, reading this thread i couldnt help but swap plier heads on my st300 and surge.

Although i'm now left a gap when in the closed position,
is the ~blade lock/keep closed~ spring the only part that needs to be removed to provide a clean fit?
I did abit of a search but didnt find a full guide only snippets.
Ah, the DaveK gap. Yes, removing the spring will provide a clean fit. I pulled up and slightly back and was able to reuse the rivets.
There is more on the handle play that is mentioned above by evil510 over here.

Don't forget to post some pictures, club dark side awaits you.

I forgot to mention that if you take another pair of pliers and squeeze the handle near the pivot point, you can sneak it closer to the size you need for the SLIGHTLY thinner ST3 plier head BEFORE installation. The rest of the gap can be filled with the original bronze washers either from the ST300 or the Surge, i can't remember.

Hack on!

I have found on a couple of my Leathermen (A Surge, and a Wave) that when I disassembled the plier head from the tool, that the handle faces where the plier sits were not parallel. A quick couple of squeezes with a very large ViceGrip remedied that, and the plier pivots just slide neatly home now.
