Time for a wee bit of controversy
« on: October 08, 2011, 02:41:15 AM »
With the advent of the new Leatherman Sidekick and Wingman.  One unique addition with those new tools is a carabiner that can also be used as a bottle opener, and a hex bit adaptor.
As exampled in Xelkos' picture.

The question now is,,,,,,,,should Leatherman start making it own line of one piece tools??

It would indeed start some controversy if they did BT! :pok: :D One-piece tools are by their very nature "simple", and any new players entering the game (like Leatherman) would be hard pressed to place the hex hole, pry surface, and cap lifter notch on their tool in an arrangement that wouldn't set off howls of plagiarism protests from fans of the more established makers. :viking: :D

In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

I think someone needs to find a way to attach a Atwood to a Leatherman.  Uh O I think I might be onto something.  :ahhh

I think it should be a no brainer for Leatherman. They have the manufacturing prowess to create some very complex, high quality tools, so I would imagine they could produce a one piecer very cheaply and sell it for a higher margin than their other products. I also believe there is still room to innovate with some outside-the-box thinking. Heck I have a couple of ideas but won't disclose them since I'm considering whether to pursue a patent. With a patent I wouldn't have to rant on the internet about plagiarism, I could actually do something about it or I could even sell my patent to a company like LTG :D

I'd probably buy that carabiner if it wasn't too spendy... useful tool in itself.

I think they should, as should the other manufacturers :)

I rather like my MTO shard, and my Artifact. One piece tool's have been around a lot longer than Atwood after all :)

You are right.  But a possible solution could be to do a contract-commision with the custom one piece tool makers(like what Spyderco does with the custom knife makers)
Leatherman cuts a deal with Raker and/or Atwood,,,,,,,problem solved ;)

A congressman in the late 1800's suggested that the US Patent office be closed because everything that could be invented had already been invented.  Reality proved him wrong and IMHO the same would be true here.  Creative minds and the entrepreneurial spirit seem to have an almost inexhaustible ability to come up with new ways to fulfill a need.

Yes  :gimme:

Actually no- the carabiner comes with the Sidekick only, not the Wingman.  See here for more details:
