LM MUT SS Tacti-awl
on: October 08, 2011, 10:27:12 PM
Jim Guy asked me to make an awl to replace the bronze scraper on the MUT. It's fabricated from 316 1/8" stainless, whatever I had lying around. I thought I had to make a spacer because the bronze is just a bit thicker than 1/8 but it seems to be fine. The bronze looks to be cast so I imagine there was a a thickness designed into it to account for mould shrinkage.

Added my favorite three rows of jimping, upgrading the awl to a Tacti-awl.

I added a little finger notch to deploy the awl, I was thinking of making a a thumb stud, but it's really tight and it would get caught too easily.

I got a few new tools, primarily a bag of carbide end mills. They cut through the Stainless like butter. I also got a new polishing wheel. Shiny

It's on its way Jim!!

I bought a MUT from her just because I wanted to see what it was really like, and the price seemed good.

People really like this tool?  Other than the really nice plier-head and maybe the saw, I'm just not diggin' it at all.  The tool was used, and the person before me played with it abit for sure.  The awl/scrapper was dinged up and really hard to open, when I looked at the pivot someone had been playing with it with the wrong tool... why do people do that on expensive items like this?  They had put one of the long bits in with the flat driver end toward the plier-head... that made it impossible to push out the driver from the slot... terrible design.  The short driver on the end protrudes into the space for the belt/line cutter... bad design, anf they expect the short one in the holder to be inserted in a specific direction (???).  The extra lock to keep it closed....pita.  Using the all but a few tools seems awkward.  Oh well I just wanted to check it out and now I did... this is like a jeep put together with parts from 3 different manufactures from 3 different models using two different measurement systems.
