Surprise Giveaway
on: December 30, 2007, 11:16:03 AM
It's me again, with something else to give away!

This time it's a digital camera.

This giveaway is not to be confused with the ones I have already announced, they are still coming.

I have 5 digital cameras and don't/can't use them all and I know one of our fine members can use one.

It's a Nikon 5700. It's about 4 years old, a little outdated, but I doubt it's taken more than 300 pics. It still looks new.

Here are the basics:

*5 megapixels
*8X optical zoom
*Electronic viewfinder
*Articulating LCD monitor on the back
*Uses compactflash cards
*2 batteries
*Spare battery pack (uses 6 AA batteries)
*Very detailed book and CD on how to use it  http://www.shortcourses.com/store/nikon-5700.html  (also comes with the manual)

All in all, it's one fine camera.

Lots of reviews online about this camera, but this is the one that led me to buy this camera

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikoncp5700/

No guessing game here, the winner will be the one with the best "sob story" about why they need a camera. We will try and do a poll at the end and let the members decide who gets the camera.

RULES:

*Must be a member
*18 years of age or older
*One entry per member (can, of course, have lots of reasons)
*MOST IMPORTANT - NO questions to me on how to use it (do you know how hard it is to learn how to use 5 digital cameras?)

If you win you are not obligated to keep it (sell it on eBay if you want), use it to post a million pictures on the forum or anything else. It will be yours, do with it what you will.

The contest begins NOW and will end Saturday midnight 1/5/08 EST USA (New York, Wash. DC) No entries will be accepted after that time. Remember, the last entry won the last contest.

P.S. I will pay to ship it to the winner, no matter where you live.

Thanks all and send in those sob stories,

Calvin

I was thinking about karma as I was writing that long winded post. If you lie and win, you may just not be able to get out of the way of that bus! :D

Well, I'll try!

I have a Sony camera, but it is frequently "borrowed" by my family members, who don't treat it nicely. If I win, I'll probably end up giving it to my sister, who loves photography and is taking photojournalism at her school.

In short, I'm generous and my camera has been beaten up!

Wow, first entry and I gotta say, not too bad! Sounds like your sister is the kind of person who could use it (maybe nobody else will enter and you'll win by default).

Generous deal there on the camera Calvin! It's taken me five years to learn how to use my 5-year-old camera, so I better stick with it for now. That Nikon looks pretty sweet though. An 8x optical zoom is a great feature to have for outdoor photography.

Here's my sob story.

I was given my first and only digital camera by a friend of mine who worked in a camera repair centre.  He had received it back under warranty and the company had simply swapped it out for a new one, so he repaired it and gave it to me.

Anyway, a couple of months (maybe longer) ago the camera broke and my friend said that he would repair it for me (he still works in the camera repair shop and is also a retained fire fighter).  Weeks passed and I didn't hear from him until I got a text from him saying how he had been knocked off of his Motorbike and had broken both his arms and legs (I mentioned this in another thread but I can't find it).  As he is still having operations on his legs, recovery time has been slow and so he has not returned to work yet.  This has meant that my camera has remained broken and so I have been unable to use it to photograph my son's first christmas.  :(  This I didn't think would matter too much as my wife has recently got a new Nokia N95 which is equipped with a 5 megapix camera.  We used this all day and took some really nice pictures (like everyone else in the family did.  At some points it looked like a strobe light was going off).  Boxing day morning, my wife went to upload the pictures and either she did something wrong (highly likely!  ::)) or the phone developed a fault and it dumped all it's memory, our chrismas photo's included.  If I had had a decent camera this would not have happened to me.

Now that was my sob story. I have been very lucky recently with Mike giving me my first fixed blade and Dunc giving me my Swisstool X so I deserve absolutely nothing! But I thought it was a pretty good sob story in the least.

I lost my original LM Wave two years ago.  I did not know how it was lost.  It vanished into thin air with my Palm PDA after a moving.  I may never be fully recovered from the loss.   Even with a Surge at hand, I feel a part of me is gone.  By the way, I lost my first SAK in 1989.  I managed to put myself together in the mid-1990s, possibly.

A tool is a tool if it is just a tool.
