The top photo is of the pre-production Wingman. The pics of that version are all over the web but the change is to the plier head we all know and "love", the bottom picture. Interestingly, a plier head pretty similar to the pre-production WM/SK appears to be headed for release on the upcoming Rev - except the Rev has by-pass style cutters

We talked about some of the changes from proto to production in this thread

I bought a Wingman off eBay late last year for around $28 or so with shipping and picked it up primarily for the attached pocket clip. I knew nothing else about it whatsoever and was pleasantly surprised by the spring loaded pliers. That's a excellent feature if you ask me, and one that I've used numerous times. The tool is more solidly built than one would expect, and opens and closes very comfortably. To my surprise I've found myself carrying it more often than any other multi-tool I own, including my new Wave and Charge TTi. A few months later I purchased a Sidekick for comparison but wound up giving it to my father (his first Leatherman) who now carries it constantly. I'm never without my Wingman, and carry it even when I'm packing something else.  :tu:

Just got a Sidekick on eBay for $28 in excellent condition.

Man, this thing feels great in the hand.  When the pliers are open, it is incredibly comfortable.  I like the spring action.  No play in the blades at all, I'm impressed.  It feels more solid in my hands than I expected based on the multiple reviews labeling it a budget multitool.  Also more compact.

This is the heftiest 2D phillips I've ever seen.  I like it.

As for hilarious design choices, I love the labels on the drivers saying what is what:

As if you will ever pull out just one (or push up just one) and the label will be useful.

I'll be honest.  For tools that aren't knives/saws, I prefer a strong simple slipjoint to a locking mechanism.

I love my Wingman. It is considered a low-end Leatherman, but I really like it.

The sprung pliers, my most popular two tools externally accessible, dedicated clamshell package opener, and the two most often-needed drivers? And a decent pocket clip instead of some poor quality pouch?

The only questionable thing about it is the file; it's too short to be useful as one. If the tip can double as a driver, as Leatherman claims, then it's probably too soft as well.

Oddly enough my Sidekick is probably my most consistently carried MT as it lives in my shooting bag tool kit.

Added a Sidekick to my daughters hiking pack.  I've always been a fan of this no nonsense tool.

Really loving the smoothness of the plier deployment and outside blade OHO on the Sidekick.  The thing is just a pleasure to use, although the inside tools are nail-destroyers, need to loosen the screws.

One thing though, I'd be interested in hearing thoughts from your guys, the large flathead.  The tip seems waay to thick to fit most flatheads, and the small flat driver is way too thin to ever really torque.  Thoughts?  I am thinking of grinding down the large flathead a bit.

I only have a single arm Wingman now as the cutters didn't work well enough for me.  It lives permanently on my workbench. Its inexpensive all stainless construction means I don't mind the resulting blemishes that would mar the appearance of more expensive tools.

I don't remember doing it but the driver is now 1.0mm at the tip so I must have reduced it from the stock 1.4mm ish.  Works fine with wide enough slotted screws though I mostly use it for prying. That being the case not sure why I filed it thinner

The Phillips I have filed down to fit the standard LM bit adapter and given it a 90 deg stop.

I love my Wingman and use the package opener the most of all its tools. Another thing I dig about it is its scissors, they're not the best but pretty darn good :tu:

Given that they describe it as a 'medium' flat head then I'd agree.  It'll go in some chunky big wood screws but it's too fat for far too many machine screws.  That said it's an excellent fit on one of the stock bolts on one of my rifles, hence living in my shooting bag.

Initially got a Sidekick but realized it feels so much out off place in the office that I ended up getting the Wingman as well.  The Sidekick would probably end up in the car or outdoors bag.  Was tempted to get an old Gerber MP600 blunt-nose (old school, I think -- coz of the different knife blade and lack of replaceable wire-cutters and USA stamped on it) but the scissors and outside tool deployment swayed me to the Wingman.

The best part is that the Wingman (and Sidekick) are relatively small investments hence I won't be afraid to use (and maybe abuse) them.

Agree, I've got a Sidekick and a Wingman in my wife's car and mine for the same reasons. It will be interesting to see how these tools will fare in a abuse test.

Question for you folks.  Does the Sidekick still come with the suede slip cover and carabiner as standard?

Nope, I ordered one directly from Leatherman 8 months ago and it didn't come with the leather pouch.
