Old folder, Any info?
« on: October 27, 2011, 06:22:11 PM »

A Mate dropped a folding knife in to me to clean
It was his Father-in-Laws
Anyone have any information on it please?

what are the scales made from (I'm thinking bone  )

'National blade' on one side of the blade with an engraving of a whale and the word 'Finback'

And '6A Quality steel Japan' on the other

The liners are brass and the bolsters feel like they are sold brass

That's a little outside my skill set
But then again, that's never stopped me in the past  :D

National Blade was/is a maker out of New York.  If you've got a Japanese knife with AUS-6A steel, it has to be... late 80's at the earliest?  That's only a guess though.  Sorry, don't know much more.

I have given it a little clean with some kitchen cream cleaner  :) sharpened it with my Lansky system and fed it a couple of drops of 3in1 oil

All that brass, and a finback whale logo. Seems like it must have been targeted at fisherman?

I have no idea Bob,

It feels like a good quality knife because its quite weighty in my hand and has a nice snap to it  :)
And I like the nail nicks they are huge  :tu:
But the blades make me think of cheap knives  :-\

Nice job Tony - looks like bone to me. I like the Barlow type patterns and that's a nice old one.

Cheers Tony, I did notice the big nail nicks. Seems like those could be another plus for somebody with slippery fish-hands. :salute:

(nothing more frustrating than slippery fingers, too-strong backsprings and tiny nail nicks) :P

Nice clean up Tony.  I saw a very similar style knife at a car boot sale this week and thought of this thread.  I didn't buy it as the guy wanted far too much for it.
