If the exchange rates weren't so high I would have bought it. I know someone that is going to want it... ::)

165 lumens is a lot out of a pen light.  :tu:

The olight penlight I posted about a few days ago was about $27, which is not bad (link etc. in the deals section)

Not bad at all, and the fact that it comes in colors other than black is a huge plus. Still I think the MT06 sooooo pretty!!!

It is BRIGHT!

I can't wait until it gets dark to test it out.

I didn't take the dog to the park last night. In the apartments it is pretty well lit so I did not really get to see what it could do. I also didn't wan't to be shining it in peoples windows.

I tested it out earlier and it is about what I expected. It does not throw very far in my opinion which I knew going in. I love throwers. I wish this light had a adjustable head like the Maglite though. For how compact it is (considering its output) and considering it runs on AA's I am quite pleased with it. I will most likely still be getting the 3rd Gen Maglite once it becomes more available. I really want the extra throw at over 600 lumes the Maglite offers.

Captain Spaulding:

That fenix is a beautiful light.  I have three smaller ones and very much like the quality.  It should be almost indestructible considering fenix quality in general.  4 aa's seems to me to be an ideal setup although I do like my 18650 lights.

John.

Another light, a convoy s2 host.  I bought this some time ago and wasn't sure what I wanted to put in it.  A couple of nights ago I got at it and put in a fasttech 1750 ma driver and an xml2 led.  It puts out a lot of light in a very compact package and throws pretty well considering the small size.  I also have a convoy s6 and this one throws somewhat better and is a little less floody.

The driver on this defaults to low, med, high, strobe and sos.  I left it in this mode as it's easy to change (ground out a star on the back of the driver to change to different mode sets).  I do like having a strobe when walking - it certainly gets the attention of those who may be uninterested in the safety of pedestrians (quite a few people in our area it seems).  I could do without sos but have yet to see a driver that gives strobe but no sos.

I was not able to use the compression ring that screws into the back of the pill to hold the driver in place - the driver has a number of components too close to the edge.  The pill is brass however so I soldered the pill into place.

I believe there is now a newer version of this light called the convoy S2+ but this is the older one.

John.

After using the LD41 some more and doing a comparison with my Maglite 3-D LED I appreciate the Fenix's output much more now. It has been described as a "wall of light" and I can say this is a good description.

I was at the local Home Depot when I spied this honking huge flashlight. Upon closer inspection, it stated 1500 lumen LED flashlight for 30 something bucks. Curiosity got the better of me and I brought it home with me. I was curious to see what 1500 lumens would be like. Well can I say it lite the whole freaking room up like a mini nova in my hand.

The brand is Defiant, which I gather is a Home Depot brand made in China, and the flashlight eats 4 D cells for breakfast. The whole thing feels very nice as it is machined aluminium.

Here are some specs...

- 3 position button, High, low, and flashing.
- 1500 lumen high beam
- 8 hour operating time. Not sure if that is at full or low setting. My guess, low setting.
- 360 m/1181 feet reach.
- auto off when switch pressed for 1.5 seconds.

The button is especially nice feeling. It is very crisp and precise. I wished more flashlights had this sort of tactile electronic switch.

Yes, this thing is big. Big as in a full sized police service style used for assaulting bad guys, or baseballs..take your pick.

The flashlight is clearly marked on the posterior end.

The front is nice. The flashlight features 3 LEDs which give a nice spot pattern, along with moderate outer layer bleeding. You can faintly see 3 LED patterning in the beam...but the center is nice, round, and crisp. I tested this light outside, and the reach looks about as advertised. This thing has power.

The button has a very nice tactile feel to it.

Other than it needs D cell batteries to power it, I dislike a flashlight that tends to roll away on you, and this one is no exception. The least they could have done was flatten some of the sides to prevent this big boy from running away on a flat surface.

That defiant is a huge light.  I saw something similar at Canadian Tire recently but figured you'd need a porter to carry it around or at least it's own backpack :)

Is it mainly throw?

John.
