Back in my youth we use to go hiking with
survey maps, and the only way you could get them was by mail, a two step process. First you had to order a map of the quadrangle areas, then you would order the maps you wanted. Unless you were fortunate enough to find a survey marker, then you could order from the information off of that, but most markers could not be found without a map in the first place, a vicious circle.
It was fun though, always exciting when the post man would hand you a big cardboard tube from the
USGS. Also quite challenging in the coal mining areas of Pennsylvania, with giant equipment constantly changing the landscape in mile wide sections.
