Velcro questions
« on: December 28, 2011, 10:57:16 PM »
How long does velcro last in constant use and how can you make it last even in very constant use?
Do you replace your velcro on your molle shealth?

That is a difficult question to answer.

The more you open and close, the faster it will wear. Also, the quality of velcro used has to be taken into account.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

You should be fine to wash it. Make sure the flap is closed and all the velcro is covered.

It is normally the soft side (Loop) that wears.
As I make my own pouches I put the hard part (hook) on the pouch and the soft part (loop) on the flap. Then you can replace it once or more before making a new one from the start.

Their are a wide range of grades of velcro , there is an industrial grade that has a semi solid hook side , and very agressive hooks - should last much longer . The grade used for medical restraints is also quite good in heavy duty use .

Fastenings is a whole field onto itself , I kind wish someone would come out with books or seminars on it .

I don't think I've had Velcro "wear out" so much as just pick up enough lint and dust to no longer adhere well.

I have a GAP backpack and the velcro on it lasted 5 years of constant usage, until finally the hooks on the hard part broke off (odd) but the soft part is still ok and there still are some hooks left even after the 12th year.
