Thanks Grant.... you just messed up all the words for me too!

As for you Allan, I think I agree.... but you might just be getting me in to trouble :D

Lefty with many righty tendencies here, including playing most instruments and using scissors (which I also can't keep my jaw still while I am using).
My vote was the penultimate one but I'm definitely leaning towards being ambidangerous ;)

Right handed and left eye dominant, making shooting a pistol a bit awkward, although I can aim a rifle with my right eye.

Def

Same here. I can actually shoot decently with a handgun in either hand, I guess it balances out. I've never tried both at once, though.

I am exactly the other way round.
So I learned to shoot with my right.

I think that living in a right hand oriented world forces us lefties to learn to use our right hand for things that just can't be done with our left.
I use my mouse, blow my nose, shoot guns and I can also play pool (billiard) with my right hand. I think I can also shoot my slingshot with my right as well as my left, and a bow and arrow too.

edit: I can play hockey as a righty too.

I'm right handed, but shoot (golf, hockey) left handed, and can do most things with my left hand just as well as my right, except hand writing, (which is too awful to even describe!) and swinging a hammer, but I can turn a wrench or loosen/tighten nuts with my left just as easy as my right.

I also carry my wallet in my left pocket, put on and tie my left shoe first, ect.  I prefer to carry my multi on my left hip, and knife in my right front pocket.

Lefty here. I agree growing up in a right dominated world does mean we learn to work that side too. I also juggle which helps to balance things up too.
Not too much call for shooting of firearms in Sheffield. So in the interest of science I have borrowed my sons nerf guns and can confirm I am pretty average with both and stay that way even shooting two at the same time.

Right handed. I only use my left hand when eating nuts in front of the computer. It is because my right hand is busy manipulating the mouse.

I was born a lefty, but was switched by an old schoolmarm type teacher I had in kindergarten.  She's smack me on the back of the hand every time I tried to write with my left hand.  She would literally recite "Get the gone Diabolus!" when she'd hit me...

I'm a righty now, and can't do much with my left other than multitask with my right.

Oh, and if that's a recent pic of Sean Young, she's still dang good looking!!!

Right handed and left eye dominant, making shooting a pistol a bit awkward, although I can aim a rifle with my right eye.

Def

I had that problem of being right handed and left eye being dominate. I had to train my right eye to be dominate. It took awhile but I dont have a problem with it any more. It sure makes shooting a lot easier.

You know, I never realized it was a problem until I'd seen Firebirds with Nicholas Cage, and his character had the same issue.  It became an issue because of the retina sensing target control system on the Apache he was training to fly.  To cure it he had to drive a HUMVEE around the base with Sean Young's panties on his head.  When I get the chance to fly an Apache and/or put Sean Young's panties on my head, I'll consider doing something about it, but until then it's not a big issue for me.

(Image removed from quote.)

I just cant the pistol slightly to the left and it's all good.

Years ago one of the Padres on a base I lived on had an eye patch because he was left handed.  As it turns out, he was at the range shooting, semi auto in his left hand and a cartridge ejected in such a way that it slipped in behind the lens of his shooting glasses, burning the surface of his eye.  He could still see out of it, but there was a big black spot in the middle of his vision, and people tended to stare at his burnt eye, so he wore a patch over it.

Pointless story, but if you are a lefty at the range, watch those cartridges when they fly out!

Another leftie here.  I baulk at calling myself ambidextrous, but there is a heck of a lot of things I do very nearly as well with my right as I do my left.  In fact there are some things that would just be weird to do left-handed, swing a cricket bat for example or shoot a rifle.

My little brother's teacher did that to him.  He's ambidextrous now.  If I hear of my son's teacher ever doing that to him then we will find out if SOG's compound leverage is strong enough to lop a finger off.

My elder brother was forced into using his right hand when he was small, but he had a very old fashioned teacher and the practice has been a massive 'no-no' in our schools for at least 30 years now.

It's a no no here too, but even 20 years ago when my lil bro was in school it still happened.  A lot of things happen that no one really knows about, and that is why we have so much scarring.  Our sitter locked us outside once when I was 5 and my brother was 3, and it was raining hard with lightening.  He was so scared he was panicking and developed a stutter that has persisted for more than 20 years.  He is now out of the Navy and working in the Oil fields of Colorado and the Dakotas, and stutters every sentence.

When i was born (1964) i was left handed, i remained left handed until about the age of 7 when my mother was encouraged by my school teacher to make me use my right hand ( i believe this was common practice in those days).  The idea being that it would make my life easier and more "normal".

In fact it had the opposite effect.  I am now mostly right handed but can and do some tasks left handed.  I write, right handed.  But i do find mental calculations and some mental reasoning very difficult at times, i believe this is down to a conflict in the brain, where the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body (and vise versa), this is compounded when trying to sort something out mentally before doing it physically.

And before anyone asks, yes i am a mixed up and confused individual,  (or where you thinking of something else  :o).

The results I'm finding rather interesting here so far (albeit from a small and specific user group), is that our poll shows a disproportionately high number of lefties with ambidextrous tendencies (choice 4 compared to choice 2).

Is this because the world is very rightist and we HAVE to adapt and therefore develop skills that righties don't have?

Or is it something innate/genetic which means left-handedness is actually a form of ambidextrousity? (If that's not a word, it should be).

A possible third option I'm just throwing out there is that we are all tool users, and many tools are right handed by design. Therefore we are more prone to adapt to the right-handed world than the average lefty.

I actually use SAK and LM can openers with my left hand, I just open the can across my body, because I can hold them with my left hand.
It doesn't work with the stamped army issue ones because of how they're shaped. (p-38 or FRED style)
But I don't have any trouble with them either while using my right hand.

I've noticed that a number of people have mentioned that they can't shoot left handed. I'm a lefty and left-eye dominant, and have been shooting for years. The ONLY true left-handed rifle I've ever fired was the target rifle I used on my high school team. I was the only lefty on the team for four years, so it was my personal match rifle  :tu: . If an automatic rifle is based on a design by Eugene Stoner or Mikhail Kalashnikov, I'm almost guaranteed to get hit with brass, especially with pre-A2 M16s. Rifles like the M1 Garand or the Ruger Mini-14 are not too big a deal, but as a lefty my loading procedure for the M1 involves hoping I move fast enough and don't get my thumb smashed! >:(  Bolt actions involve a slight turn on my shoulder so I can work the action, but I've been doing it so lone it's second nature. Some designs (straight pulls) are easier than others. Single shots, especially Martinis, are no problem at all. And, if you ever happen to take a good look at a Colt Single Action Army revolver or its clones, you'll notice that the loading gate is on the right side. It's a lefty wheelgun!
There's no such thing as "Too pretty to carry".  There's only "Too pretty NOT to carry"...... >:D
