SOG Power Assist now like a switch blade
« on: January 16, 2012, 12:13:00 AM »
Got this in a trade with 5hif7y very pleased with it :tu: but noticed the plain edge blade has a more spring than the serrated one. My understanding of the power assist is, slide blade lock to off, use thumb stud to ease blade open, power assist takes over to fully open blade, then use the unlock button to release and close blade. With this one, slide lock to off and push the blade unlock, the blade deploys like a switch blade, anyone else's like this  here's a vid of what I mean, vids not the best quality, sorry :-[ still pretty 8)

Not sure its normal  I thought its assisted not full auto, meaning you start to open blade with your thumb, mine works just on the button, I reckon is just super springy, anyway here's SOG's vid from there site :tu:

Oh well, its dead :( had another quick flick and the tension seemed to get more and more, the blade then wouldn't stay closed without the lock on, as soon as the lock was released blade would deploy :o had a look with a magnifying glass and I could see the lock that should hold the blade closed until you use the thumb stud had a loose back spring, its snapped :P so I took it apart, here's the pics :ahhh
Surgery for a silly assisted SOG.

You watching Gunny, the offending broken back spring.

Bonus trip to Hawaii if you can guess what tool is holding the broken part.

Look closely, see the hollow rivet, just below and to the left is the back spring, right one broken.

Holding broken right back spring in place.

So if your SOG Power Ass-ist ;) suddenly goes all switch blade on you, well its :'( time :tu:

im really sorry this has happened to you Badwolf. the SOG was a shelf queen to me so i didn't notice any issues. if there is anything i can do to help just let me know.

i looked on there site and it looks like a free fix to me. i cant believe that happened, i used it like twice and gave up because my hands where to small.

let me know how it goes and if there is anything i can do, then i will.  :'(
