Hey bruddah, can yuh spare a Dime?
« on: January 19, 2012, 06:44:07 AM »
While at Gerber today we managed to see the new Gerber Dime- perhaps the only tool we saw today that Bob and I agree on!  While some of you had commented on it in the Recon Thread I figured you'd all like to take a closer, more detailed look.

First off it comes in red and black, green and black, and black and black!

As you can see, the bottle opener is permanently sticking out, which is nice for a few reasons- one the implements on these small tools can sometimes be difficult to get at (very short lengths mean not much leverage to pull the tool out) and many of them really don't work all that well once they are out.  The Dime solves that, and while it may look kind of awkward in pictures, it really doesn't seem like it gets in the way during key-carry.

In addition to the usual array of tools found on small tools like this, the Dime also has a clam pack opener.  Now I doubted the need for clam pack openers for a while, but I do enjoy the one on my Octane, and this is pretty well the exact same tool.  It also makes more sense to me on a small keychain tool than on a full sized tool like the Octane, so this was another point in it's favor as far as I was concerned.

The blade is pretty stout and is similar in shape to the Crucial, which makes sense as this tool's original name was the Mini Crucial (or something similar- I honestly can't remember).  It does feel a lot more solid than it's former namesake, so don't worry about that!

There's also a tiny file/eyeglass screwdriver and a substantial little flat head- standard, but nice to have.

The scissors also seem like fairly standard fare, but they aren't- on top of using the backspring (which is good) there's also a small pin on the flip side that acts as a stop and keeps the blade from extending too far out.

The Dime also features a neat spring system to keep the tiny pliers open.  I'm more accepting of the sprung pliers on tiny keychain tools than I am in full size ones, and this is actually pretty cool.

All in all I'm looking forward to the Dime more than I have for just about any keychain sized tool that I can remember, except perhaps the Shard and/or Artifact.

I was just thinking today that noting from this year has really gotten my attention (well we knew about the Rebar for a long time) an then this pops up. :tu: I really like it. Looks like an improved version of the PS4 with a better bottle opener and scissors. I'm glad they didn't turn that bottle opener into a carabiner clip like on the Curve. Any idea on the MSRP? And will we be ordering some BO models for the MTO.multitools section? :D

EDIT: I found it for pre-order on KnifeCenter for $16.95. Looks like a very decent price. :tu:

It is indeed pretty sweet, and it, along with the CRKT Tool are pretty well my top attention getters from this years show.  I'd lump the Balance in there too, but I still think of that as being from last year even though it wasn't released.

Does anyone else think that the little stainless tab at the end of the coloured scale just above the bottle opener in the first 3 photos looks like the pull tab for a pair of tweezers?

In fact it is- we get in such a hurry sometimes, running from one meeting to the next that sometimes we forget some details.  For example, I had initially forgotten to take photos of the plier head before moving on to the Crucial and I had to go back and take some detail shots of the pliers!

Don't tell Bob- he beats me for messing up his show time!
