The future of the Donation Button
« on: January 25, 2012, 02:36:36 AM »
Recently the Mod staff and I have been banging our heads against the wall trying to come up with a good way to manage the new donation feature, aka The Multitool.org Treasury.

One of the issues I've always had with donations in general is that folks are giving money to the site to get.... nothing.  Frankly I never thought that was fair.

So, now that we have the Treasury functioning properly, we know what it does and how it works, we have a new plan.  I'd like to point out that the initial idea had come from Allan, but then I made it complicated!   :D

How it works is, if we reach our fundraising goal each month we'll pick someone at random who donated $10 or more and they win that month's prize.  We'll announce prizes at the beginning of each month, and each multiple of $10 gets an entry- which means if you donate $20, your name gets entered into the draw twice.

We'll start on the first of February with what I think is a pretty sweet prize.  Any questions?

Not as much excitement about this as I'd hoped.  I guess when you see what we are offering it might change everyone's tune...

It's a good idea and very nice of the mods, thank you.

Please don't let the prizes turn out to be an expenditure and affect the receipts of the donations.

Donors don't expect anything in return, don't feel bad about it.

Everyone, donors or not, registered user or not, benefits from the collective knowledge of this forum. This site is a good enough 'prize' you have given us.

Cheers
You have the right tool... but do you know how to use it the right way?

Just great!

Now I'm going to be compelled to donate every month.

We have lots of good sources for great prizes, so that shouldn't be a problem.  :D

I think that basically having a raffle monthly is a great way to drum up support for the donations.  I agree that the prize should be kept confidential until a winner is chosen.  The issue with the first month is that we won't know the scale of the prize until it is awarded.  But really what we are doing is helping the forum not donation for personal gain (and I have a bridge in Brooklyn for sale too).

I do have a question about the anonymous entries I am assuming that those people will also be entered into the drawing the same as the named people?  If so and anonymous wins are they going to be revealed to the membership?

We will be announcing the month's prize at the beginning of each month, so folks will know what they might have a chance of getting.

Anonymous donations won't be entered into the draw.  It's really hard to announce a winner who doesn't want anyone to know they were involved.
