Is It Just Me, or are LM Sheaths Smurf Lately?
« on: January 26, 2012, 01:33:15 PM »
Setting aside the excellent MOLLE sheaths, and the 100% total piece of smurf "premium" leather ones, the latest nylon ones suck.

(entering rant zone)

First off, they are way too wide for any tool. I mean, I can put a Wave in a smaller one, or an ST300 in a larger one, and with the sheath closed they flop around in there like a dead fish.

So you might ask, "perhaps they are leaving room for items to be put in the side pockets?", my answer is "Have you tried to get anything into those smurfy, smurfin, piece of smurf side pockets?". The way they have the elastic loop sewn onto the side elastic, you need two pry bars, and a block and tackle to get a AAA light in there, let alone the fact that it will rip the buckle right off of your belt trying to pull it back out.

So now I have to spend all my freakin time trying to find the old ones, and paying a premium price for them.

(leaving rant zone, thank you for your attention)

I just use the plain sandwitched nylon ones.

The new sheaths are definitely crap, and if I buy a LM tool, I will have to replace the sheath immediately to something carry-worthy.  I'd rather they just not include a sheath at all and pass the savings to the sticker price.

Yup I noticed they are pretty crumby now too.  Cost cutting I guess... sad and/or a sign of the times... i dunno.  I'm sure Metropolicity is ok with it though, his sheaths look much nicer! :D

This my friends, is EXACTLY why I decided to start my own line. Utter crap. And once you DID get your aaa flashlight in, it would only be a matter of time before the side elastic walls would give out.

Thanks Syph for the props :)

Hey Metro, do you have a "minimalist" line of sheaths? A series of sheaths made to fit a tool only?

Specifically one for the Wave and one for the ST300  :D

Actually I really like the new nylon/leather sheath with the two side pockets, if that's what is being discussed.  I sewed one pocket up and it now holds my extended adapter real nice and tight.  The other side holds a monarch 300 which fits perfectly and slides right out when I need it.  I was thinking to buy a couple more of these sheaths in case they ever stop making them.

I hate the new sheaths.  I do like the all leather style that comes with the Blast, kick, and fuse, but they are so cheaply made that they only last six months and then I have to replace them.  I didn't like the Molle sheaths at first but I got a Gerber molle sheath with my MP600 and it surprised me.  I may give the LM ones another shot when I buy my Rebar, because that sucker will definitely be Black Oxide and it seems that LM has a fetish for shipping BO tools exclusively with molle sheaths.  If that doesn't work it's going in my current blast sheath.

As far as the stupid smurfing junky smurfin premium smurfing leather sheaths, those are a waste of space.  I got a ST300 last week on a whim so I would have some trade fodder, and it came with one of those.  As with all the others I have seen, the tool sits with about half it's length in the sheath, while the other half is exposed on the sides and only has the thin strip at the top to hold it in.  This causes the tool to slip out when carried horizontally, and if you happen to roll over it if you are laying under a car or cabinet it squeezes out.  Worst sheath EVER.  My gerber molle sheath holds the ENTIRE tool in with an opening at the top.  Love that.

The newer nylon ones are just as bad as you said, my ST300 didn't fit any better in the one I have laying around.  It's much too wide to hold the tool, but my iPhone fits in there nicely so that's why I keep it.

LM has gotten lazy, and they continue a downward slide. They know that their fans will buy their stuff, so they cut corners on their sheaths. This attitude has  seeped down to their Quality Control Dept, as many posts here will attest to.  It's too bad, because LM has great ideas for tools, but the execution is lacking.

Remember the days when LM had great leather sheaths with snap closures, and the tools were assembled  and finished correctly?

The standard leather sheaths are nice, simple construction, good snap closure, attractive. But you are right, the leather is so cheap, that with daily use, you're lucky to get 6 months out of them. :(

The MOLLE sheaths are great, but the large ones are huge on your belt. Absolutely love them for MOLLE bags though.

Well, I have a brand new "Skinth ZE+" on the way from Canada for the ST300. If it works as well as it looks, I'll be ordering a "Skinth ZE" for my Wave :D :D

If we are talking about this one then i agree, not a bad sheath at all IMO.

A little bulky perhaps and a touch loose on my belt, but otherwise I don't have an issue.
