What is your most specia/importantl multi-tool or SAK?
« on: January 31, 2012, 12:27:06 PM »
I was reading a little off of Leatheman's facebook page when someone mentioned my name. I read the posting to find out that Leatherman has a photo contest and that the deadline is tomorrow! I quickly thought that if I was going to give it a crack, I may as well take a photo of something that has meaning to me. In that case, I have one particular special MT that is special above all the others.

Some of you may think that my collection is crazy. I do to. What some of you may not know is that I collect to honour my father in some ways, and in others, because I have a fascination with them...much like my dad did. My father passed away in 2008 of cancer. He was a big MT fanatic. I remember him praising the Leatherman PST since it first came out. Oddly enough, he never did buy one though...as he loved the concept but couldn't bring himself to trashing one on the job site. Hence, he bought all sorts of MT junk. He ruined quite a lot of it at that.

He saw a Leatherman Pulse at a store and bought one as his "dress" MT. He always wore it with a personalized belt buckle he bought in 1980 (Cornwall) just before we moved to Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. When he was not at work, I rarely saw him not wearing these two pieces of metal.

So that is the story behind the most important piece in my collection...well at least special to me.

So what are your special or most important pieces to you?

Here are the 3 big locals he belong to or worked the longest for.

For me personally, it's my old Swiss Champ which has been used and abused for over 20 years now... it was the first "proper" tool I owned and was a birthday present from my mum :)

I was thinking about replacing the scales as they are quite mashed up, but I decided to leave it alone as a testament to my long standing relationship with these shiny things!

I could not pick a single item.  Right now it would be the Rambler, Pioneer and Swiss Champ my mom gave to me.  I use them a lot and couldn't imagine replacing them.
The SwissChamp is the most useful tool ever invented.

I certainly don't have the same attachment you do Chako, but there are a few I would never trade away.

My Tourist was my first SAK and (eventual) realisation that SAK's are not the cheapo gimmicky things I once thought.

My Swisstool CS Plus was my first ever "proper" multitool, and has been a part of my life since the day I got it

... and then there's this ...

Mass produced and not expensive when it was made or when I got it, but to me a symbol of what my home town once was. I'm still searching for my grail item

On a bit of an abstract note, the one that means the most to me that I DON'T own is probably this one

Chako, that's a great story; I'm sure your dad would be proud.   :salute:

For me, it's an old Swiss Champ I have.  It was a present from my wife for our second anniversary.  I've had it going on 14 years now.  I used to carry it religiously in a small pouch on the strap of my EDC bag, and used it regularly.

The past few years, because I've acquired other SAKs and MT's, I don't use it nearly as much anymore, and now it lives in the drawer with the rest of my tools.  I can't say it's a shelf queen because it's definitely seen some wear and tear, but of all the tools I have, it's the one that's most special to me, and I don't think I could ever part with it or replace it.

I have three.  The first would have to be my old Vic Classic SD.  It was my first pocket knife, given to me by my dad at the age of 6.  The scales are long gone, and I replaced them with some old ruby ones I had laying around.  I love that knife, so much that I'm scared to carry it.

The second would be my old Sideclip.  My parents gave it to me 12 years ago, and it is my most used multi to date.  As some of you remember, I sold it on Ebay awhile back and made a large effort to track it back down, an effort that was successful.  I bought it back at a slightly higher price but it was worth it.  I still don't know why I sold it, but it won't happen again.

The third is my Grandfather's PST.  It has hardly ever been used, but he gave it to me as his mind was going, and now he doesn't even remember ever having it.  He doesn't have much longer and has moved to Florida for health reasons so I may never see him again, That one means the world to me.

No particularly special MT's or SAKs, though my original Supertool is one I hold onto despite not using any more.  It was my first Leatherman and was a constant work companion for a good few years.

They were sick about multitools in the 19th century. There was a guy here that had a gallery of these supposed pocketknives with like 100+ tools sticking out of everywhere. Bizarre stuff like a blade for bleeding your cow (or self) when sick. Need to cut off a chicken's head? Yeah they had a tool for that!

I have two.  The first is my #4 Multitool.org Charge ALX :)

The second is my Alaska Wave that I picked up on my Honeymoon in Alaska :)

My most special tool is a Wenger Commander, i dont know how old it is.

It is special because my grandfather gave it to me when i was about 8 years old.

He owned a farm down in South Carolina, and one summer i went down there for the whole break. In the beginning of the summer he gave me the Commander. I though it was the coolest thing ever, he taught me how to keep it clean, sharp, and taught me proper care for the tool. I remember him always making little extra chores for me to do, or saying " Oh i forgot my tool. Hey Evan can you help me out over here." Making me feel extra important.

Once the summer ended i went back to school in New Jersey and my parents put it so i wouldn't be able to get to it, because they thought i was going to do bad stuff with it. Then that winter he went into the hospital because of the some chest problems. I brought the tool back to him because i wanted him to have it, but he resisted and made sure that i had it. Then in the spring the same year he passed away at age 82.

So that's my most special tool in my collection, and one day i hope to pass it down to my son or daughter.

My most special tool to me is my Super Tool 300. As popular as they are, some might expect an MT.O member to pick something more "rare".... but my ST300 is always the tool I turn to when I need the job done, and need it done right.
I have two, but the one I carry is very sentimental. I've used it to build my son's swing set, fix his toys, fix my other MTs when they needed maintenance, solve all sorts of household problems, auto work, firearm maintenance, etc..
That's the one I'm going to give to my son to carry when he's old enough to appreciate the value of it.
It's a big honkin' MT with attitude, and I love it!!
