Antique Mall "Schrade+ USA 227UH" find.
« on: February 18, 2012, 10:36:00 PM »
Best as I can tell it's 1973 to 1986. Pictures for your enjoyment before I give it a little cleanup. Blades are razor-sharp and obviously were kept that way. Perfect walk and talk, too. Sadly no leather pouch. Found it squirreled away in case on the third floor full of pocket watches. Very similar in almost everyway to my Camillus made Buck 317 from around 1981.

I've read that the + means it's stainless steel and not the common carbon steel.

That is a nice one.  I was thinking that most uncle henry were stainless steel, is that wrong?

I have a few other UH's and none of them feature the "+" symbol. Although they're I believe to be newer in age than the 227UH, so they might have dropped that plus symbol. I googled around and the + just denotes their knives that feature stainless. Given that the UH's were a little higher end I wouldn't doubt stainless on all of them. Tracking down and getting a positive answer on anything Schrade related is difficult I am finding. They made the 227UH from 73' to 86', but the stamp used on this knife according to their chart is on knives ranging all the way from 73' to 04'. So hard to get a straight answer.

At this point I think finding any Schrade made prior to their Chinese Invasion (i.e. Taylor Brands) is a good Schrade no matter the year.

I completely agree with you!  It's a good pattern as well!

All I saw today was some frost junk and overpriced case and kissing crane knives so I'm jealous of you.

:D

The price was about right on this one, but I didn't buy it. I actually got it as a gift. I took my Mother, a veteran antique dealer in her own right (if she were a man she'd collect vintage knives) to help her find some Milkglass and to see about selling off some stuff from her Mother's estate. For my help she offered to pay. $50. A bit higher than I would've maybe gone, but I think it was a good price. I'm into vintage "traditionalist" designs lately...so I'm good to go.

I just polished it up a bit. Went over the rust spots with a stiff nylon brush and it brushed away all the rust. Then went over with a clean felt drum polisher. Doesn't do much other than just make it look a bit shinier. I need to pick up some mineral oil (I use it on my SAK's. Food friendly) to lube it up a bit tomorrow.
