New metal Svord Peasant knives
on: February 29, 2012, 07:49:05 PM
Having a soft spot for Svord Peasant knives I was quite happy to receive today these two, part of the new “Slim Metal” range.

I got a blue and a zinc coloured one.

Note that the Zinc coated one is steel (magnetic) and the other coloured ones are Anodized aluminium (non magnetic). The steel one is noticeably heavier, though not by much; they have similar weight to the wooden and plastic ones. Since they both have the same thickness of handles (2mm) I would expect the steel one to be stronger and more robust.

The zinc one looks like bare metal (hard to show in pictures), unpainted but polished. When I saw it at first I though that someone has forgot to attach the handles to it, like a SAK would look when you take the plastic handles off.

The blue one looks like it had a cheap paint job, with visible lines (see pictures)that appear like the paint had run, though it is supposed to be anodized.

They both fell flimsy in the hand, with their handles moving about as there are no spacers to keep them apart at a fixed distance. The impression you get is that someone just tooka Peasant knife apart and stuck too thin pieces of metal to the sides as handles...

Note that one side, with the screw heads looks good but the other one looks very industrial. The screws appear secured to the ugly round bolts and not designed for easy disassembly.
The blades were the usual Svord peasant blades, sharp but with uneven grinds.

I took my pictures in honour of "Braveheart"   :salute: [Go Gareth!](celebrating the New Zealand and Scotland collaboration)!  :D

Also the shape and width of the handles is similar to the other peasant knives.

The new metal ones are significantly thinner.

Here is a comparison with the metal handles of an ST300.

The movement of the blade is similar to the other peasant knives. The metal ones have a bit better “lock up” (stiffness) than the wooden ones and the wooden ones are better than the plastic ones.

Still, for me, the plastic ones seem the more complete knife.

Pros:

Usual Svord charm
Thin and strong
Colourful

Cons

Cheap looking, for their price
Flimsy built and paint finish
Ugly looking bolts

Well I like my wooden handled one just fine, and have even considered a coloured plastic one as well, but I can't say these are screaming "buy me". :-\  I guess if you were trying to pack one into a tight space?  But otherwise I don't quite see the attraction of them.  And yes; the zinc plated one does just look unfinished. :)

Have you been tempted to play lego and treat the metal scales as liners and attach the plastic ones either side? :)
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I actually liked the industrial look of the zinc coloured one. The ergonomics seems beyond horrible, though. My hand hurts just looking at those pictures.

ZED, my limit is plastic... Talk to Neil for Stag  :D

Steinar, the metal is pretty weird feeling; thin, rattles, the handles move in your hand, feels like if you twist the handles they will bend..

Sounds like the knife would be pretty bad for some actual work. The whole thing seems a little gimmicky to me having read this.

I'm bumping this with a question:  did they also make a smaller keychain version with metal scales?

I have a "SVORD" labeled knife that's 4 inches long, tip to tip, closed, with a 2 inch blade that I can't find information on.

I don't have a regular Peasant knife anymore, so I can't show it compared to each other.  I'll grab a banana; that's close to the same size. :P

I have not seen one like that before...
May be something they did to advertise, may be a custom order, may be something modified by a user.

It looks like the blade is SS, is it?

I'll need to check once I'm more fully awake; how do you tell if it's SS or carbon again?  Isn't it something with wavy lines?

Neil: Also, as I was falling asleep, I thought I'd remembered you or one of our members having something similar.  Don't know if I imagined it or not.

Apart from seeing if it rusts  :D carbon steel leaves a metalic taste/smell on items it cuts which SS does not .

I used a wooden scaled Svord for a couple of years and loved it - once the scales had been sanded and oiled it was a very comfortable blade and the steel is excellent. I don't like these new metal scales at all. They seem too gimmicky. Why mess with a winning product (Opinel.....)

That's my two penneth worth anyway.
