Leatherman and Gerber Warranty Departments - A Comparison
« on: March 08, 2012, 04:29:22 AM »
Somewhere in a thread in this forum I mentioned that I had picked up a Gerber MT in a second hand shop.  It had a broken serrated blade and a few other minor problems.  At the time I said that I would not send it in for warranty work because the Gerber warranty specifically says that the it applies only to the original owner.  After thinking about it I changed my mind.  The reason? I had the perfect opportunity to compare Gerber and Leatherman warranties because I had sent a Wave in for repair several months ago.

Both MT's had been purchased from the same second had shop and had the same damage.  It didn't strike me until after I had the Gerber for awhile, but the broken serrated blades, twisted jaws, chipped main blades and twisted flat screwdrivers appeared on both MT's.  The Gerber had more rust, but neither had much.

I  had sent the Wave to Leatherman for repair.  They lived up to their reputation by sending me a replacement so quickly that the turn around time was only 1 week.

I sent the Gerber in with an honest account of how I had gotten the tool and what needed to be fixed.  One week later a new MP600 Blunt Nose showed up in my mailbox.

It would be hard to find any difference between my experiences from the two companies.  Ther new tools even share the same minor flaw.  Both arrived with a slight bur on the main blade.  It was easy to remove both by stropping on a leather belt.

I've always been a big fan of Leatherman's warranty, but it would appear that Gerber's is just as good.  I can't say that I'm a true Gerber fan yet, because I haven't found  a Gerber product that I like enough to keep.  But now I have the confidence that Gerber will stand behind their product when I do find one that I like.

Good to hear that you gave them a chance after all.  I daresay that Gerber will change a lot of people's minds if someone gives them an honest shot.

Good to hear. I picked up a diesel from a second hand store, that also has a lot of damage to it. I was skeptical with their warranty department.

Maybe i'll send it in finally knowing they stand behind their tools.

You didn't believe all of the other threads regarding Gerber Warranty service?

I just sent my first pair of tools to Gerber.  They received the tools.this morning Portland time.  For those of you who sent tools in, what was your turn around time?

Strangely, here, LM and Gerber have the same main dealer; they will replace them for 25 Euros. Thus, their warranty departments behave the same here too! :D ..... I did talk about that some time ago in a thread so I will not bother doing it again

I just ordered a Gerber MP400 Compact Sport.  It will be my first full-sized Gerber tool other than the frequently derided and often publicly flogged Suspension (it was on clearance OK and it was for research purposes ).

I've not always loved Gerber stuff but this one looks good and I will give them another shot.

Gerber makes plenty of good gear. You won't be disappointed with the MP400 I would think. As for their warranty service. I haven't heard anything negative.

OK, what is covered under Gerber warranty?

Blade breaks?
Rust?
Screwdriver strips?
Sheath/Case wears out?

I have never used a Gerber/Leatherman warranty.  I have used Kershaw and Buck warranties and they are top notch :tu:

Here's a link to their warranty info, it seems reasonable to me.
 http://www.gerbergear.com/Meet-Gerber/Support/Warranty-Info

I've just yesterday sent an original Mr Pinchy back to the Uk main agent for possible replacement.
I have to say after owning it myself from new and then passing it on to a work colleague it was in the sorriest state I've ever seen a multi tool.
Two of the blades where snapped, the serrated blade was like a butter knife and the pliers had become just a plie having only one side of head remaining. How it got like that I have no idea !!!!??
I'd forgotten about the tool until I found out after joining the forum it had a lifetime guarantee, so I got it back from him and thought I'd see what Gerber Uk's importer would say.
I called them up and a nice lady on the phone explained that it would have to be replaced and tried to find out from me which model it was to try and offer me a suitable replacement but couldn't narrow it down enough to a specific model (although I was accurate with my description). In the end she said to send it off to them and they'd post me out a replacement.

It will be interesting to see what happens from here considering its state  :o

Anyone have any thoughts on what I should reasonably get as a replacent (if indeed I get one due to the state of the thing) ? It was of the blunt nose variety.
