Introducing myself
on: March 13, 2012, 01:00:48 PM
Hello,

i am Thomas from Cologne, Germany. I´m in my Mid 30´s and stumbled over this forum while looking for spare parts for a Gerber MP.

I got my first SAK when i was about 10 and am used to carry one or another type of tool for the last 15-20 years.

I am working as a Janitor / facility manager and do bike repair and restoration / customisation work at nights.

I do like to fiddle around with things, although i did not mod any SAKs or Tools until now (Swapping scales on a SAK is not considered a mod, is it?)

I own a Victorinox Swisstool for a few months but tend to carry my old Gerber MP 600 that superseded my initial Gerber Multiplier i got for my 21st birthday when i sent it in for service.

Yes, it rattles, it can´t be accessed whith closed pliers and more advanced tools are on the market. But i am used to it and it gets the job done.

Thanks for the warm welcome, see you on teh various boards!

Lowtech

Welcome! :)

How does the SwissTool compare to your Gerber?

Judging it fact based, the swiss tool wins hands down. The Plier moves smoothly, you are unlikely to pinch your palm or finger, the plier head has a good size. The tools are easy to access and fold out in a manner that for example the Philips driver sits more centered then on the gerber so turning is easier. The Blades are oriented in a way that they point away from the tool, opposed to the Gerber where the blade points to the center of the Tool.

If i don´t find anything like it, Maybe i´ll do a pictorial/comparison on those tools.

I've always said the best tool is the one you have with you, and since you are more likely to have the most familiar tool with you then that makes the MP600 the best one!

Others may be technically better on paper but they really are terrible when they are at home in the drawer.

Welcome to the forum.

So may i assume that you are a member of the european/mid 30s minority, too?

Thanks for all the nice welcomes. I guess I´ll have a lot of reading to do and i hope i wont be nagging the seniors with questions answered a thousand times and i will try to keep reviving long dead threads to a minimum  unless i cann add something.
