My dad had (has?) an old churchwarden that I was fascinated with as a kid.

However I can now only think of Terry as looking something like this;

Sorry mate. :D

NECRO!  >:D

Since kicking the cigs back in April (which was an utterly hellish experience), I have gotten back into the pipe. I generally won't have more than 5 bowls a week, but really enjoy sat outside on a nice day with a pipe on the go.

The number of pipes has increased as I decided to try a few different types, and also have a few for specific tobacco types to minimise ghosting. All my pipes were cheap though, with the most expensive only costing me £25. My two main briars are Parker, which are essentially Dunhills which didn't quite make the grade. Slight cosmetic anomalies which mean bugger all to me, meant they were within my price range and not upwards of £450  :ahhh

Aside from this, I have a couple of clays, a smaller "baby" briar, a couple of hardwoods, some cobs, and a hobby pipe - which is essentially a pipe blank for you to shape yourself at home. I've rounded off a couple of corners, and just smoke it as a huge chunk of briar  :D

Over the next few days, if I'm feeling able, I'm going to try knocking up a simple rack for them - then I'll get some piccies up  ;)

Cheers mate  :salute: it was a month of hell, and i'd hate to ever go through that again. Well worth it though.

Of course, just to make it more fun, I'll also be aiming to make the rack using only multitools  ;) Don't expect a masterpiece though  :D it'll just be something fun and functional  :P

I've been smoking a pipe for abut 50 years now. Mostly love the 300 series Petersons and a few Savenelli's. I have a boring pipe, and afternoon pipe, and an after dinner pipe. If I have some leisure time while fishing I'll have a pipe.

A few meerschaums.

A few more briers,

Two old favorites; a well seasoned Savinelli on top and an oldie but goodie Camenetto bottom.

I started on cigars, but then tried pipes, kinda got in on it, but then had to stop everything because of health. Still have my little collection, mmm still smells good too, heck there's even some tobacco still in it, god I could so go for one

A trout fishing trip in the Sierra Nevada's wouldn't right without my pipe in mouth. The old Peterson 314 brought me luck!

Excellent Al! :tu:  Any particular blends that you are enjoying? I'm very partial to nice, smoky English blends myself. :)

Mostly Kendal stuff so far Tom. The ones I've really taken to so far include Bob's Choc Flake, Coniston Cut Plug (unscented), Squadron Leader, SG 2013 Ltd Ed.

Ennerdale Flake and Macbaren Cube are ones I really enjoy an occasional bowl of, but wouldn't want to smoke too regularly. Seems I'm not a fan of Tonquin, so 1792 is a real chore. I'm thinking of mixing it with some #7 broken flake to tone it down a bit

I've been smoking a pipe for abut 50 years now. Mostly love the 300 series Petersons and a few Savenelli's. I have a boring pipe, and afternoon pipe, and an after dinner pipe. If I have some leisure time while fishing I'll have a pipe.

A few more briers,

Quite an array you've got there Carl  looks like the simplifying you did with your knives and tools didn't cross over to your pipes  :P I haven't tried any meers yet (or Falcons for that matter), but as I'm at a dozen pipes, I've told myself no more unless some leave. I actually have one pipe I've kept unsmoked to remind me that I already have too many  :)

Question for the pipe smokers - why are pipes racked bowl downwards? I'm looking at making a simple rack, and bit down would be way easier to make. Does it make any significant difference?

No, my pipes never saw a downsize! :D

One reason is, I'm the only pipe smoker I know. My friends Hoppy and Bill and Tom loved their pipes, but they all passed away by now. One of the bad things about being an old fart is, yoou outlive too many friends. Some of those pipes belonged to my friend Bill, who was a die hard pipe smoker, and we used to go to pipe shows together. When Bill found out he had only a few months left with his cancer, he gave me his pipe collection, and a few other things. He passed away in 2006, so about half of these pipes are his.

Now, I'm the only pipe smoker left that I know of, and I never see anyone in public smoke a pipe anymore. I'm not sure what I'll do when I get the bad news from some doctor. If I just keel over someday with the big MI, my family will probably just toss the pipes in the trash!!!! :o

It was easy to give away pocket knives, everyone can use a good pocket knife even if they don't realize it yet. But very very very few people smoke a pipe these days. Maybe I should give away some pipes here? I'd like to know that they would go to someone who would really appreciate them and smoke them, not just stick them on a shelf someplace until the 'ol lady throws them out.

Hey, that's not a bad idea! If I did a pipe giveaway, would you guys like that?

That's a really nice idea my friend, but personally I would politely decline, as I'm already in excess of the limit I set myself. I'm currently at 12, and my limit is 10  ::) This means I'm not allowing myself any more pipes until I only have 9 left. I refuse to go down the same rabbit hole with pipes that I did with knives and tools.

I just got my first pipe yesterday. A savinelli series iii unfinished briar 404 (I think).

Had my first smoke last night, I've occasionally smoked cigars before, but never a pipe. It was a bugger to keep lit, but I understand there's an art to it.

Beautiful pipe, I was a cigar smoker heck that humidor you have there looks just like one of mine that I still have, but I also tried pipes, I remembered my grandfather used to and I just absolutely loved the smell, he actually gave me all of his. But I didn't get very far, yeah there a little hard to keep lit, like you said there's like an art to it. Still have all mine, but something came up with my breathing and smoke doesn't agree with me..
