« on: March 25, 2012, 11:00:37 PM »

A decent haul :)

Nice old hoof knife stamped Victoria

got a great deal on these two a 1924 soldier and a pre 1908 model A Soldier it has a 5 on it which could well be the year in this case :)

top one here the bottom one looks a little small to be a soldier

never seen a 3 layer one of these (with a saw)

And some nice alox a 85 and a 96

Very nice haul!  :tu:

One question: Is that odd knife a hoof knife? I have a similar one without the hand guard and my information that its called a timber or race knife, used for marking lumber and wooden crates and barrels.

A Race knife :)

ok that makes more sense I could not quite see why you would need a hand guard on a hoof knife

Cheers for that

Nice picks (and pics... it's a terrible joke)  Didn't knew about the one with the saw.

I came up with some pics of race knives, including another one with a folding guard, apparently made in Solingen. (#1).

Also came up with a shot of some farrier knives (#2). Some of them appear to have blades with a similar shape to the race knife. Most of the photos I found of farrier knives were of fixed blade tools, though a few were folders. I have no idea how to tell them apart from race knives.

The Antiques Roadshow has convinced everyone around here that any old rusty/dirty thing they've found will pay for their kids college fund.
