Received PowerAssist back from warranty repair...
« on: May 15, 2012, 02:21:10 AM »
...and I'd like to find out if my experience so far is unusual.

It's my first SOG tool, and literally the first time I tried to use the pliers, one side of the head snapped clean off. It wasn't even a particular onerous task, either; I was loosening a rusted thumbscrew on an AC unit. Repair was no problem, they even threw in a flashlight / sharpener combo. I'm just a little bit hesitant about the tool since, at this point, my personal failure rate is a little high. This isn't a common occurrence, is it? How well do they hold up when applying a bit of force?

Sounds like a fault in the casting - that's not normal although it does happen to a few tools that we've heard about.

I say you should use the hell out of it and see if they have sent you another dud :)

Ya I think it's just bad luck with your first one.  I have a powerlock that I use hard and it's never had a problem.

I've heard a lot of military folks who rave about the punishment their SOGs take. I have to assume this was a rarity. As Nuphoria said, give it a good hard workout to restore your faith in the tool.

Will do, thank you. I can assume the warranty is still in force after repair?

Indeed it is.  SOG always looks after their customers.  There's an old saying that says even monkeys sometimes fall out of trees, and even the best companies can occasionally make a mistake.  SOG tools are just about the toughest tools out there, and you should be able to use it as hard as you like without worry.  And, if something should happen, SOG will be there to make it right.
