Zip durability question
« on: April 08, 2012, 07:11:28 PM »
I would like to know about the quality / durability of the Maxpedition Organizers zips.

Over several years I have worn out several fanny bags' zips. Normally the zip last but not the moving "clasp". I have bought two genuine leather bags for a much higher price but the first one failed with the zip. The clasp worn through. I bought it from a flea market and I guess the maker used what material was locally available. Stainless steel clasps are not available here in ZA. I have a separate pocket in the fanny bag that I use to store my three sets of keys, and this is the zip that I open the most.

In my opinion the best type of zips is type that they use on a trouser fly. I have almost never worn out a fly zip.

I can make my own organizers, but my problem still lies in getting a durable zip. I have thought about the plastic thinner wet suit type of zips, but I do not have experience with them. So I am thinking of rather buying the organizer complete, but How long will the zip last if I open the zip several times a day?

Regards
Johan

They use YKK zippers, which pride themselves for being among the toughest zippers out there. Very strong and durrable. I never had a problem with mine even if the pouch was stuffed to the rim. You can google YKK zippers for more info.

Go with YKK , and periodically lubricate with plain old candle wax , extends life of all components . I have no opinion on non YKK zippers , just not worth the risk IMVHO .

I have had previous experience in bad quality zips and that is very frustrating. I am doing DIY camping projects for myself and tomorrow I am contacting them to find out if they sell to the public as well.
I am in the process of making a fanny bag from leather and would like to put the durable zips in there.
I will also visit the Airsoft store where they sell Maxpedition products.

I bought 50 m (165 ft) of zip and 100 fasteners from YKK for the price of one organiser pouch. Time to make some stuff!
