I'm looking to buy a sharpener for when I'm on the go. Mostly to be kept in my arm rest of my Jeep or carried with on light hikes or overnight camping trips. Preferably something small that can kept on the belt or in a small pack pocket. I've seen those pull through pocket sharpeners but it seems like majority of people say to stay away from them for knife use. I am currently thinking about the Smith Edge Stick or Lansky's diamond steel rod. Any recommendations out there?

Sounds like the Spyderco double stuff is just what your looking for. It's small but just long enough to use easily. Has the same medium and fine grits used on the sharpmaker for maintaining an edge. Comes in a nice swede pouch and is fine in the pocket.

The spyderco does fit the bill but I am not really interested in spending $40+ on a sharpener that will get little use. I am looking about something no more the $20. Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm using a Smith's PP1 Pocket Pal sharpener. I know it's probably not what you're looking for, since it's a draw-through type, but I'm a sharpening novice, and I just need something to bring my blades up to paper-cutting sharp, not razor sharp. Weight on it is just under an ounce (.9oz, or 26 grams). It also has a fold-out diamond rod.
$9 plus shipping from Amazon.

DMT makes pocket sharpeners for about 10 bucks a piece in various grits.

I just made myself a 6"x2" leather strop.
I think I may make an even smaller one and make a sheath for it.

How about a lansky dog bone sharpener
http://lansky.com/index.php/products/multi-shaprener/
It's the best pocket sharpener I've used.
They also make a Spyderco one for serrated blades I carry often

I just carry a smith's diamond stone, it's about 3 inches long and does a decent job.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I think I'm going to go with the Dmt keychain fine sharpener.

I use one these Rapala sharpeners for my multitools - it's easy to use and cheap. It doesn't make razor sharp edge but it gets the job done fast. Often a little bit rough edge is also good - example for cutting ropes is easier with blade which has been sharpened to a little bit rough. For beard I use shaver...that's lame but it's the truth.

For finer knives I have this 5-piece set of diamond sharpeners:

I used a Lansky Dog Bone for years, but eventually replaced it with a DMT DuoFold Fine/XFine. The folding handles make it easy to use safely, and man-o-man does it put a nice edge on a knife.

a cheaper alternative to the DMT Diafold Serrated Sharpener (coarse, fine, extra-fine) is the
Lansky tapered rod
which exists in "fine" only:
Anyone experience with it?

I usually carry the (apparently discontinued
) LM pocket diamond sharpener, but it is rarely used as I periodically touch up all blades on a Sharpmaker back at home.
