Odd use for a Leatherman Charge
« on: April 26, 2012, 07:36:05 PM »
One of the workers here whipped out an old model Charge (I didn't see if it was a Ti or XTi ) to use. Naturally I went over to see what he was doing, and it turns out he was using the plier tips to unscrew the retention bolt on an angle grinder. What a great idea, at least until you break the tips off the pliers!

Still, I have no idea where the wrench for my angle grinder is, so I may have yo use this method myself sometime.

I took a couple of pics as he was doing it, but they are in my camera, not my phone so we'll have to wait until later to see if they are any good.

I've never personally broken the tips off a LM plier head, but I can see it happening very quickly with that activity.

The antenna mount for a police trunked radio has similiar holes in it and I use my Charge to hold them in place when I tighten them. I do that a couple times a week for the last couple years. Hasn't broke the tool yet. Only my back.

Here are the pics- looks to me like a Ti.

While I can see this being an abuse claim, I can also see this being exactly what a multitool is for- a simple solution to a problem when you are away from your tool box.  Considering this was a truck driver from BC, I doubt he could have been any farther from his tool box and still been in North America.

I do that all the time with round nuts/retaining rings that have pinholes.  Also slip the tips into slots of drain plugs (on farm equipment).

No problems so far!  (I thought that was what they were for... ::))

It's a good idea, and I'm glad to hear yours have held up Nate.  I have no idea where the heck the wrench for my grinder is, and this solves the problem of me trying to find it or having to get a new one.

Before my current job, I worked at a 2-way radio sales and service company.  Are biggest customers were police/fire/EMS.  I got quite familiar with those mounts, both in my early days as an installer and later as a field service tech.  :tu:

I have actually used my pliers in the closed position to pry stuff that I know would snap the large flat head driver.   :-\

I do the same all the time.  Especially to line up to things before putting a bolt through (Like a bracket and support arm).

That's exactly what I do!  Works amazing!
