Coleman meals?
on: April 07, 2012, 11:14:17 PM
While replacing the tire on the car today I spent some time wandering around at Canadian Tire, and just happened to spot some Coleman freeze dried foods, similar to the Mountain House type foods.

http://www.coleman.com/Products/64666/coleman-meals

I haven't tried them yet, but I did pick up the Southwest Chili and (I think) the Cheesy Tomato Pasta.

Anyone else seen or tried these?

They are packaged for Coleman by Enertia Trail Foods

I haven't tried any yet, but the "Dirt & Worms" is on the top of my list  :D

Yes, I looked very closely at the Dirt & Worms one!  :D

The Coleman ones are a bit cheaper and not much smaller- the Mountain House ones are 122g while these ones are 113g.

Next time I'm at Canadian Tire I'll be sure to pick that one up too.

Well, as Derek can attest to, I not only finally got around to trying the Chili, but I did it using my Svea 123 stove to boil the water, and ate it using a CRKT Eat'n Tool!

Sadly no pictures of that portion of the day, but the Chili was actually pretty good. I enjoyed it quite a bit as did the others who tried it. I didn't actually have enough water to prepare it properly but it was still quite edible- if you had been out in the woods for a day I doubt that a little less water would have deterred you from eating it.

I also found it was a pretty hefty amount for just me. It could easily have done two people, provided they were either light eaters or weren't looking to be weighed down by too much food.

I'd say these were about as good as Mountain House meals, so now I'll have to try and find similar meals and try them head to head.

It wasn't too bad.  Not ideal, but functional.

I was eating these 2 or 3 times a week in the winter.  My JetBoil, 14 oz of water, and presto...hot lunch.

My fav is the Cheesy Tomato Pasta.  The directions are spot-on in regards to the amount of water.   The Black Bean meal(I forgot the exact name) was difficult.  The beans needed to be cooked a bit more.  In fact, I think they just need to be cooked...the soaking didn't quite do it.

$4.00 in my Walmart Sporting Goods Department.  I like to mix 'em up with Mountain House single serving meals so I don't get too bored.  Coleman doesnt have as many options.

I haven't eaten the cheesy tomato pasta one yet, but it is sitting there in my cupboard taunting me every time I open it.  One of these days I'll do something about it.

I'm quite pleased with the one I had, although you are right, some of the beans were a little dry, but I attributed that to me not having enough water to have done it properly.  I suppose more testing is needed.

I've been wondering about these as I've seen them at walmart quite a few times. The worms and dirt look real good. Lol

The ones I had were good- at least as good as the Mountain House ones and a dollar or two cheaper.  If I see these again somewhere I'm going to stock up pretty good on them.
