Fire lighting kit
on: February 12, 2008, 08:32:40 PM
Here's a chance to show off your fire starting kit :D

It's my thread so I'm going first :D

Here's some of my stuff :), left to right we've got A ferro rod and a spy capsule full of cotton wool, next we've got a Blast match one handed fire starter (very handy if injured) 3 Zippo's, one modified (not pretty but it works) so I can attach a lanyard to it, bellow that you've got a IMCO Super and a brass match case, next to that there's a Strike Force, and a steel flint striker a mate made for me :), and finally the magnifying glass on my swisschamp :)

Not bad for a non smoker :D

So what have you guy's got ???

You have more Zippo's than me and I am a smoker.  :o

I have just a standard brass Zippo which goes everywhere with me and my trench art lighter.

That's really it for fire starting.  :(

Well here are my pics as promised.  Sorry they aren't the best but someone kept hassling me for them so they are a little rushed.  :D

Front...

Back...

And underneath...

This lighter is all hand made, and looks as though it has been made by soldering 2 half pennies onto a brass nut that has then been filed down and shaped.  The screws is the bottom allow it to be filled with fluid and gives access to the spring chamber.  These screws, as well as the spring, are again all hand made.

It actually works really well! :)  But due to it being quite small it is very rarely carried as I am worried it will get lost.

I'm back!!

Only thing I own to start a fire in the wild is my Hudson bay kit. It has the flint the steel and a box to hold it in with the greatest magnifier ever made to start a fire. I swear it will make a flame in 5 sec.

Nice kit Mickyd. I've got lots of stuff also, no complete pics of them all though.
several zippos, nato matches (storm proof), fire steels, blast-match, bics of all sizes,
couple magnesium bars with flint, 12" f-lenses, several wallet size f-lenses,
several small film cantainers of cotton/vaseline, waterproof/container of dry tinder/with fat wood.
here's some of the steels;

Those Blast matches really are good aren't they :)

I bought mine after trying to light a fire one handed with busted ribs ::)

Ahh, tis wee George.

Just the brass zippo and Cricket for me.

Sometimes I carry matches if the whim takes me, but I don't like rattle.

This is the case I carry my flint and steel in. The burning lens really works and the piece looks sweet. I can carry everything in the thing from the stone(you may have to napp one a bit) to the striker and charcloth. I do recomend charcloth it is cheap and very easy to make.

Thanks It is part of the reinacting gear that I carry when I go trekking. I usually go off and just hike alone for one week with just primative gear and only what I can carry. Funny thing is I usually prefer the old gear to the new stuff. With practice you can reallly be faster with the old stuff than the new. At rendevous we usually get a fire by flint in under 5 sec.(that is with prepped tinder)

Thing that is a shame is how today people shy away from the outdoors. I actually used to get in trouble if I did not have a pocket knife and a book of matches on me.

Myself my brother and cousins all would spend most every night even the school ones camping in our yards. We would actually follow the receding snow line further from the home.

At the age of about 12 we were trusted to walk by ourselves 1 mile through the woods to get to the shooting area our dads all set up and spend hours plinking away with our .22 and we never shot ourselves.

Unfortunatly times are changing and I really would hate to be a kid today.
