This is truly amazing!

Can the Tofty Ag be scaled down to AAA size (assuming there is an LED and driver that would fit)?  That would be a cool AAA flashlight design.
If the trees blew down the wind and no one was around, would the alphabet song really go backwards?

Title change done.  It's a work of art mate, love it. :salute:

Thanks Gareth, i was thinking how many pieces in an art gallery could sit looking all pretty on it's pedistal during the day and help the security guard complete his rounds at night.

I am in awe.

Those lights are simply amazing.

Thanks Mr. Whippy, my aim is to make a torch out of every metal type possible, barring those that explode when wet, glow in the dark, poison me, are liquid at room temperature or would bankrupt me......I'm probably half way there already.

x10 I'm stuck for words  :ahhh

It's ok i think i got the gist of what you were trying to say.

Excellent work!

Thanks alot Sylook, one of the great thing about 3D printing is that the amount of work needed drops considerably.

Thanks gustophersmob, the design can scale in some respects but things like threads will not scale down well, as below a certain size they will not be accurate enough to work properly.
Also the wall thickness cannot drop below 0.8mm ,
The design elements such as the cut-outs and body shape could be reused but all the details would need to be redesigned.
I agree it would be cool as a AAA but i reckon a AA light would be more suitable for printing with this pattern.

Yeah your not wrong, it's a heavy buggar an all.
I didn't expect it to come together quite as well as it did so having it done already is a great relief.

Credit to you for following through with the project.you could have ended up with a fair lump of scale silver if I had designed it.

Your a bad man, I keep finding myself on the shapeways website looking at odd things to buy!

The problem with shapeways is there is no vetting of uploads at all so if you search for something like 'torch' or 'tool' you get pages of crap, things with no photos or renders and no description. Nobody will ever buy them but they waste search page space.
Although making desirable models easier to find might not be a good things from your point of view as it starts getting very expensive.

Thanks Northern, how about this one?......

As you can see the tail is polished while the head is not, i actually ordered both pieces unpolished but i'm not complaining as it's shown me that it was a mistake to do so.
I have since polished up the head to match the tail but it's too late to take a picture so i'll do that tomorrow.

I've decided that this light needs a more impressive output so i plan to make a direct drive xp-g drop-in to be powered by a 10440 lithium-ion cell and using a aspheric lens.

Here's something else that got delivered at the same time that might be of interest.

Now how does this work?

If I want one of the tubes, I can buy it right?

But how do I find the headunit and electrics for this?

(Awesome design btw).

Thanks guys, i think it looks alot better than my first attempt at any rate.

Good point, i haven't really explained it all properly yet have i.

First off you will need an 'MXDL 3W Luxeon LED AAA flashlight/torch'.
A combination of some or all of these words plugged into ebay should find the correct item
If not here's a Link to one. They cost very little so i always buy more than one.

The light can be dismantled quite easily with the only tools needed being a screwdriver to pry out the tail spring. The LED, reflector and lens just push out.
The components look like this:

These are all the parts you need apart from the two silver torch parts from shapeways:
Silver AAA Torch 2 Head
Silver AAA Torch 2 Tail

And thats it really apart from a battery. Assembly should only take 5 minutes and it's complete.

Thanks ICanFixThat, i had another read through this thread as i love to see the evolution of an idea shown so graphically.
If i could still edit the first post i'd put in a current progress photo and paragraph to help newcomers decide if the thread is worth reading through or not.

I wanted to post some of my hard won knowledge and experience about 3D printing on a speSmurfpillst forum but the only one i could find (3Dprinting-forums) never confirmed my account then never replied to my emails. Shame really as 3D printing needs an independent forum run by people as competent as here.

It's been a while but i finally got round to upgrading the internals of my silver AAA.

It's a direct drive Cree XP-G LED drop-in with a brass spacer ring and aspheric focusing lens powered by an AW 10440 lithium-ion cell.

The LED is mounted on a ceramic MCPCB and bonded to a solid copper heat-sink. Wiring is MIL-spec teflen.

The electrical contact points are brass, the white pins are fibre-glass and the whole tail assembly is potted for greater impact resistance.

The new drop-in shown against the torches previous internals.
