Skinth SP Question
« on: July 27, 2012, 08:59:55 PM »
This is pretty much directed to Metropolicity, but I figured some others may be interested.

Is it possible to get a horizontal-opening version of the SP, where it could ride horizontally, and open so the phone would have to be pulled in an upward direction to be removed from the case?

In my mind, it wouldn't need any other pockets, but a light pocket could be put on the bottom or something.

The BIGGEST problem with that design is that there are a zillion phones out there and to design something that sits horizontally limits the models that can sit in it.

thats why I've been avoiding designing one that does that.

I got my SP a couple of weeks ago.  It's a little wider than I'm used to, but it works very well and I'm very pleased with it.  Eric was nice enough to put a flap over one of the side pockets and close the bottom so I could put a small SAK in w/o fear of losing it.  I carry my HCRI Preon in the regular, open side, and either my Executive or my Compact in the flapped pocket.

Thanks for the replies.  My issue is that I'm a bigger guy, and where I carry my phone, a vertical case would literally be a pain in my side ;)

I got the molle option, and it rides pretty low.  Not much of a problem so far, and I usually prefer horizontal mounting myself.

One nice thing about the molle option, is there are two vertical straps each with a snap at the bottom, and one fixed horizontal strap.  (Referencing the pouch standing up normally.)

I thread my belt through the two vertical straps, with one on each side of a belt loop, and then run them under the horizontal strap.  It stays very secure that way, and when I'm in the restroom, it holds it securely enough that the weight of the pouch and its contents doesn't pull my belt out through the other loops.

Here's a quick pic, to show you how the straps are set up.

Russ

You've probably been using cases that ride pretty high. I aim to keep them as low as possible with out compromising the ergonomics.

I also fear, not for the snap or Velcro to give out but for the user's phone slipping out after the flap was open.

For me at least, I don't think that'll be a problem...  my iPhone rides very low inside and the flap covers it very well.  I don't have mine in any kind of protector though, but there's still plenty of room for it if I did.

I have an older 3GS model, and I will be upgrading this fall when the 5 comes out.  It's going to be taller than the current models though (but the same current width), having a true 16:9 screen ratio.  I imagine even then, the new model will fit in very well with no retention issues.

My SP has been great so far!   :tu:

Thanks to both of you for more replies.
After looking at it, I might have to pick one of these up in a couple weeks.

Metro: Any idea if you're going to be making more of the Spartan|SP cases?

Had to line up a new supplier/manufacturer. Should be available by the end of Aug.

Maybe available for preorder and shipped in a a couple of weeks type thing.
