There and Back Again- A Hobbit's Story
on: November 14, 2012, 01:01:16 PM
I purchased my tickets yesterday for this movie, a month in advance for a pre-screening a day before it officially opens.  I'll be seeing it in IMAX 3D, and I'm really looking forward to it.

Anyone else wanting to go see it?

I'm glad to see that they cut it into two movies.  I really wished they'd have cut the Lord Of The Rings into six movies, especially since they were actually six books.  Each book was actually cut into two halves when you read them and I think it would have made the whole thing a lot less confusing.

I have to admit I'm less excited about this than I was for the Lord of the Rings films.  I'm sure they will be very well made films, but I don't have the same love for the Hobbit book as I do for the LOTR books.  I'll still be going to see them though. :D

I am planning on seeing it, even if the trailers are showing scenes I KNOW weren't in the book. It does concern.

I just listened to The Hobbit on CD in the car while driving my boys to and from school, etc.  Good stuff, and a good way to get a book into your brain without having to turn pages.  I've watched LOTR probably 100+ times, and am looking forward to this one.

Kim and I are sitting in the theater now, waiting for the Hobbit to begin. I managed to get tickets to the advance screening and I've been waiting for a month now!

We are seeing it in IMAX 3D.

We have decided to wait until the kids are all back from school for Christmas break. So, I'll have to wait until(?¿?).......... We'll go see it in IMAX as well more than likely. Skyfall ruined me for the regular theater viewing.

I was very disappointed. I just posted my thoughts on Facebook and I'll post them here later as I don't want to peck it all out on my phone again.

In short, all the major plot points were there although they got to them the wrong way around, they've worked in a grudge match between Thorin and a one armed goblin, and frankly I think Peter Jackson just read the cliff notes on this one rather than the actual book.

I'd say see it in the theater because it is visually as stunning as the others and that really is the best way to take it in.  After all, the visuals are pretty well the only up shot about it.

And, before you think I'm being a purist and just taking the piss for no reason I'd like to mention two points:

1- Radagast the Brown is "manufactured" for this movie. He existed in the book, but only mentioned in passing.  He certainly didn't run around with dried bird smurf on his face, riding on a sled pulled by super powered bunny rabbits.

2- my wife never read the books and she was pretty well as disappointed as I was.

I went to see it yesterday and I kind of agree.

It's been ages since I actually read the book.. maybe 15-20 years ago. I know it was meant to be more of a children's book, but still.. there was too much silliness and too little actual substance in the movie.

It's not bad though, just not at all what the LOTR movies were.

Expect a very nice looking adventure movie and I don't think it'll disappoint.

As I just said on FB:
I'm not using as much as one penny on the Hobbit, when thousands of real movie entusiasts, myself included, really needs a full movie with "the Penguins of Madagascar".

I've had a niggling doubt on this for a while, in a much as if this trilogy was going to be better, or even as good as LOTR ... they'd have done this first. The fact that is was almost an afterthought done on the back of the success of the other (truly excellent) movies has never really engaged me.

I'll not be going to see it on the silver screen (very rarely do anyway). My excitement over a movie like this is measured by when I buy the DVD - whether I get the DVD as soon as it's released as I did most recently with Avengers Assemble and MIB III, or whether I wait till it's at a bargain price. Unless I hear some real overwhelming reviews on this, I'll be waiting till they're a fiver each or a tenner for the three disc set

Thanks for the heads up up this mate  :tu:

That's a shame, but I didn't have high hopes for it myself.

I got a bit bored with the LOTR movies actually, which wasn't what I was expecting :(

We live in Tolkien country here. Just down the road is Sarehole Mill where they hold a yearly festival in his honour, and a couple of miles down the road is the place where the Two Towers are (supposedly the inspiration for them anyway). Lots of other stuff round here which relates too some friends of mine live next door to his grandson Tim. I'm not a superfan or anything, but it's kind of cool being round the history of such good books.

I'm wondering if it's just that Peter Jackson can't take Dwarves seriously?  After all, poor Gimli just became a running pratfall gag for the LOTR films, a damn same IMO as it's not how Tolkien treated him.

I went to the midnight showing of the movie last night, walked into the theater to get in line, and a stranger walked up to me and gave me a free ticket, saying 'Merry Christmas!'.  I saw the regular version, not the 3D, and although there were a lot of folks at the show, on 4 screens at this location, it was not sold out.

I enjoyed the movie (read the book over 30 years ago) and will go to see it again, since there's so much going on in the battle/action sequence scenes that you will have to see it two or three time just to take it all in, lol.  8) I look forward to seeing the next two installments.  Lots of CGI, but done well enough to avoid comparison to SyFy channel cheesiness... :D

Never managed to read the Hobbit, though I think the LOTR is awesome. As to the LOTR movies I was very underwhelmed...in fact.I just didnt really like them, and to be honest I've no interest what so ever in the Hobbit.Stretching a short book into three movies is just a bad idea.

The problem with seeing a movie based on a book you have read is that your preconception of how things look or should look is based on your personal imagination, guided by the author's description.

A movie will always be adapted. Characters (and scenes) added and removed on whims of directors or screenwriters...

Rarely do most movies I've seen after reading the book live up to my expectations... however I do find them entertaining at face value. I feel this way about most superhero movies as the original story lines generally take a beating... The last Spiderman movie comes to mind... I did enjoy it regardless.

Hopefully when I get a chance to see this I will find it entertaining as well.
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

I understand and accept that things will be changed. I greatly enjoyed the LOTR as I said, despite a few things having been cut out, changed or placed in different order.

There was too much artistic license in this one, and as I said, my wife never read the books and could pick out the added stuff.

I also liked it, it was a bit more "cartoonish" and child friendly than the LOTR movies. But good nonetheless.
I watched it in 2D and will probably watch it again sometime in the future.
