Klein multitool
on: March 10, 2008, 01:25:24 AM
I've always been a big fan of Klein tools and screwdrivers as they are excellent quality and made in the USA to boot. Seems like they make a multitool too. I've seen one on Ebay for about 64 bucks. Anyone have one or know someone who has used one? Wonder if it is made in the USA too?

How about its price, is it comparable to the cost of most MTs?

That's a rather unique one! The Klein "Tripsaver 1016" is made in the USA by Kutmaster, a good old cutlery company in Utica New York.

Link HERE.

The tool is built like a tank, very solid, but the design is becoming somewhat dated. It came out in the mid-1990's if I recall correctly. A good tool though, worthy of Klein's reputation. :)

Bob had a good talk with the folks at Utica at the SHOT Show- perhaps a few pokey sticks would get him to talk about it! :P

And here I was thinking that was going to be a multitool with a non-orientable surface. Leatherman Möbius anyone?

I have one of these built by Kutmaster.  I like the locking idea, and the simple design.  But, the saw, and other tools aren't up to the standards of the usuals mentioned on this board, LM, SwissTool, SOG etc.

Yeh, the blades are kinda short and blocky don't you think?

It's not the prettiest thing in the ranch, the tools are on the stubby side.I like to think of the Utica,as the Sherman tank of multi-tools;simple,rugged,and reliable.

The saw blade is about half again thicker than most saw blades. I swear you could almost use it as a pry bar! :P

Is this a foregin made multi with the Klein name brand on it?

It looks like a simple but strong tool.  What are the fold out impliments?  All I can see from the packaging illustration is a saw or file and an odd stubbly blade.

It's made in the USA by Kutmaster, of Utica New York. According to info we got from Lonediver, the design is from 1988. (Before Gerber and SOG tools!)

Check out the way the blades lock open. A massive cast tab on the underside of the plier handle engages a notch in the knife blade, locking it open. Crude, but effective.

Thanks for the link. Interesting find for me, http://www.kutmaster.com/cat/multipurpose.php. I used to work for Caterpillar. I'll need to keep these in mind when I'm ready for another tool.  :D

Whew, all this talk has been the inspiration to put up a new page on the Multitool Encyclopedia. It lists all the variations of the Kutmaster tool that I am aware of HERE, with some pictures included.

Years ago when I worked in a tool house we carried a Proto brand multi-tool that looked just like that.  A lot of guys bought it just because of the 1/4" bit holder on the end.  Never got a chance to test drive one myself so I'm not sure how well they held up but they seemed like they were built like a tank.

They're certainly not a delicate tool, that's for sure.

Yep that would be the beast.  Except I think the ones we carried were some sort of black oxide version.

Whoa, black oxide? That would be cool!

I linked to the following page previously in this thread. It lists the versions that we knew about up to now:

https://wiki.multitool.org/tiki-index.php?page=MultiMaster

Any way you could still get a picture of one of those black ones?

I need to run down there later today so I'll see if I can find any info on it.  They stopped being a Proto dealer years ago but still have around $30k in tools they are trying to liquidate strapped to a pallet in their warehouse.  If I can find the list and that tool happens to be in there they might let me break into the pallet to investigate.  From what I remember though most all of the multi-tools sold before they pulled the plug on the Proto line.

Really,it says a lot about the Kutmaster,in my estimation, when companies like Proto, and Klein are willing to stake their name and reputation on a tool made by somebody else.

Well I didn't see a black oxide in the price list while I was down at the store but their oldest price list only went back to 2005.  I remember seeing the tool around 1998-1999 so I'm not sure if I was seeing things or maybe they stopped offering it and it's no longer in the price list.  Now they just list the 18575 blunt nose (list $96.75) and 18576 needle nose (list $86.38).

Well thanks anyhow, as I did not realize there was a needlenose version of the Proto. (I just now updated the Encyclopedia page)

Lemme know if you ever hear anything more on the black one please!  :)
