The Commander (LM Super Charge Mod)
on: December 03, 2012, 02:17:22 AM
Inspired by my original super Wave/Black Tide Project, I started with Charge XTi (with a broken 154cm PE and a snapped off saw bought off ebay for cheap) as the base.

Here's The Leatherman Commander!

Let's break this up into a few parts, starting with the easiest to the hardest.

Plier

The easiest mod, by far is the swapping of the plier heads to the Charge body. Being an XTI, and wanting two bit drivers, it was an easy direct swap over.

Since this was a vintage Charge XTi, the broken blades were replaced with a S30V PE and a 420HC SE/hook blade from a defunct Charge TTI (also bought cheap off ebay).

Drivers/Awl

The next mod required a bit more machining. Having run into the same problem before, the awl from the Rebar is a no-brainer swap in. However, the bit driver is .5mm too thick. So on the mill it went and .25mm from each side was shaved off.

For whatever reason, the awl did not need any alterations (unlike the black tide). It dropped in and is perfect as is.

The second driver, I decided to add a second locking notch so I could get a ratchet style 90 degree driver for those tough screws and bolts. A small 2mm solid carbide end mill took care of the new notch.

Don't quite know what to put in place of the small bit driver yet...so it stays. Chisel? who knows!

Scissors

Next up was the scissors. While this may LOOK difficult, it is actually incredibly easy. Stealing a pair Fiskar designed scissors from a Gerber Flik, it was nearly a drop in mod. The back spring needed to be pinned down and again using carbide drill bits, a .5mm hole was drilled and a nail was peened into place hold down the spring while in use.

The liner lock tab on the Charge handle was depressed into the body past it's return point to make it flush with the body. This allowed the scissors to be swung in and out easily, but did not make the mod irreversible. If needed, the lock could be bent back out.

The Ti scale has build in washers and spacers for the would be saw, this had to be milled off to accomodate the increased thickness. On a Wave, this mod is not necessary as the main pivots are exposed and not under a set of scales.

Blade Exchanger

Yes! You read right, a blade exchanger (BE). I've always said it couldn't be done, but somehow I did it. Taking the blade exchanger from a Surge, the small part was carefully shaped and the locking surface mated with the smaller liner lock.

This was the easy part. The BE is quite thick and needs room to move and separate to replace the blades. This was a challenge, but thanks to the thick Ti scales, material could be removed to make room for it. A whole 1mm was milled off, and a little lip was left to make sure the scale properly when buttoned up.

Here you can see how much difference there is in thickness and how much Ti had to be removed.

To maintain as much stock rigidity as possible, the least amount of Ti was removed. If you look carefully on the end of the BE, you can see where the lip is from the milling.

Oh at this point, I polished the bronze washers with 800 grit wet.

What resulted from this mash up of Titans, is a svelte 4" tool with the capacity and tool set of the 4.5" beast. While I was at it, I made the newly transplanted BE OHO with the addition of a bill shaped slot.

I ground down one of the saw blades and made the end pointy, dry wall style.

So any T-Shank tool can be used, but not folded into the tool.

It's surprisingly not that pricey. My mill was only $1300. The big cost is the tooling, collets and end mills.

It's the tuning that its a pain the ass.

It's been a wild ride! I got fed up and really wanted to join the super charge party after using my Black Tide faithfully for 6 months.

is there less play in the aftermarket jigsaw blades?

There is MORE play in aftermarket...I use some shrink tube one the shank to shim up the slack.

beautifully done, as usual!  I can't believe you got the BE to fit in a Charge... very impressive.  and the OHO is a nice touch too.  :)

I really like the 90-degree locking notch on the bit driver as well -- might have to give that a shot.  have you had a chance to give it a workout yet?

I literally finished today, avoided injury all day until tonite when I decided to see if I could put a small pry bar in place of the small driver I slide my thumb in the end mill slicing it mildly deep. Not hurt, just annoyed.

I also want to slide in a ferro rod, again for proof of concept :)

I wish Leatherman would send me parts... :)

I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of the people at LM wished you'd stop doing all these different mods as it means they can no longer say "It simply can't be done" as you've showed that it can (and was).  Mind you, the marketing bods are probably all over this site, garnering ideas  ;)

To tell the truth, I'm not nor have I been a very big fan of Leatherman for a while.  I see genius mods like yours being proven in design yet no interest from them in improving their product - and this is nothing new.  Some of this stuff is obvious, yet LM keeps on doing its own thing and if you don't like it - here's the finger to ya.

That aside, you've done some spectacular work there, very impressive, and it would be a shame if some company didn't hire your creativity.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I am sure its not as fancy as it seems. Skinth is a pretty big dream for me that has come true. Even if I can't be at Leatherman, I am very happy and pleased to know that 1000's of Leathermans are being carried in Skinths today!

More bushcraft developments.

I had been toying with the idea of adding a ferro rod somewhere on an MT and the Commander is a good place to start.

I milled out a 1/8" slot on the inside of the scale, the scissors offering a lot of space. I took some aluminum rod I had as a stand in, still waiting on the ferro rod. The Alu rod is 2.2mm but the ferro is supposed to be 1/8".

Other websites have listed their 2" long ferro rod as 2nm diameter. In any case, both should fit.

The biggest problem I had was finding a striker ON the MT that was removable. Since adding the Blade Exchanger, this problem is a thing of the past.

This mod is by no means a replacement for a proper ferro rod or another kind fire starter but its kind of a proof of concept and last ditch.

File/Metal Saw/Diamond file/Pry Bar

I've always wanted to try this. I took the removable diamond file/file and shortened it, sharpened the tip and added a small nail slot.

Now, before you say...that join will never be strong enough to pry stuff...the operative idea is that the file/pry bar is REMOVABLE. This is sorta like a souped up mini flat widgey bar.

Here it is closed in the Commander.

And this is for Gnarly...a Commander Skinth! A L-Shield with a couple of mods, a back pocket that is divided into two for the saw and file. I like this and might be a good feature for the XL-Shield (designed for the Surge).

Along for the ride is a Thrunite Ti light, space pen, bit card and the two blades.

I asked about a wave file prybar awhile back, the general consensus was that it was the wrong kind of steel, maybe the surge file is different, regardless, great mod.  :salute:

I unno. I had a heck of a time grinding it, it'll do for a quick prying.

I got the ferro rod from eBay a set of 1/8" and 3/16" (for the Surge mod I am planning for)

T&T for The Commander (LM Super Charge Mod)
Reply #25 on: December 06, 2012, 11:04:50 PM
Tweezers and Toothpick/Knife grips

After failing twice at manually milling this piece from a couple of small scraps of titanium, I gave in a went digital. I've toyed with adding a plate on the sides for extra grip. I had a mildly successful attempt when I made my own "Flair", AKA The Panache. A brass plate was added, jimping was hand filed...this will be so nice.

What you are looking at are two plates that will be epoxied on the flat surfaces on the Commander, what you don't know is that they are getting printed in alumide and black plastic (for now at least) from Shapeways.

These plates serve a much more Swiss purpose than just aesthetics. Not only are they grips and jimping for the use of the outside tools, the two hollow cavities will be hold a set of Vic Classic Tweezers and Toothpick!

Here's a visual reference of how the T&T will sit.

The hole and gap in the bottom will accomodate the rivet on the side of the Commander, this also serves as a pressure point to hold the tweezer and toothpick. Here's a really bad rendering...the T&T will pull towards the knife pivots.

I ordered a set of black plastic and a set of alumide...over all $20 and should be here by the new year. Once I know they fit, I'll order the polished stainless. I'll need to some hand finishing, I didn't want to fire up SolidWorks...most because this is an extruded shape, but I also didn't want to get into 3D modelling hell.

Vic Pen.

This one I've been chasing with a stick for a while now...I prefer the Wave over the Charge because it is slimmer and more compact, but there is certainly a lot more possibilities and hidden mini cavities on the TTI.

Taking a 91mm Vic Pen...meant for the scale of a Vic SAK plus, I saw an opportunity for it to be slotted into one of the blade chambers.

Here you can see it inside the very back of the blade slot.

Measuring it up and chucking it on up, a small notch was milled into the back edge scale, this was only two operations, fairly simple.
(look on the left side of the top scale in the photo) You'll also notice the other milled slot, that's for the ferro rod already described in a previous post.

Here you can see how tight I'll be, I ended up putting it in the SE slot for a couple of reasons. 1. I didn't want the edge on my PE to be scratched from the pen being drawn/replaced. 2. The SE snub nose tip is less dangerous in case the pen pushed it out accidentally 3. The SE has 20x more sharp edges to wear down than the PE one.

The pen was a little loose inside the newly found slot so I glued some .02mm styrene I had leftover from a vacuum forming project. That ate up the smallest of room and it also provided a nice smooth surface for the pen to ride against.

Gluing the strip down.

A rough in fit and it looks promising!

Buttoning it up!

Again, this will never replace a real pen...but if I need to grab one thing to leave the house and defend my honor with...it might be this tool!

Oh yah..I know of AC3d and it's terribleness. I hope to offer the T&T if the first run fits well, I am also thinking I may add a bottom to the t and t slots so they don't ride along the actual tool itself, but it'll make them thicker.
