Recruits on parade
on: December 06, 2012, 12:18:25 PM
Some time ago, in a Recruit appreciation thread,  I floated the idea of a collection of them with scales in a variety of materials....

.. and now...

A-Ten-Hut :salute:
First batch of Recruits ready for inspection SAH!  :salute:

Roll call...

WOOD,      SIR, PRESENT SIR!
PLASTIC,    SIR, PRESENT SIR!
ALUMINUM,  SIR, PRESENT SIR!   but it's ALUMINIUM Sir...
CARBON-FIBER,  SIR, PRESENT SIR!   er, it's spelled f-i-b-r-e, sir... I mean SIR!
TITANIUM,  SIR, PRESENT SIR!
STONE...
LEATHER...
BRASS...
STEEL...
CERAMIC...

Looks like we have a few Recruits AWOL...

actually they are around, but haven't been fitted with their new uniforms yet.

Stay tuned.

Very hard to pick,  The Titanium is uber cool, but the colour anodizing on it is the biggest fingerprint magnet.
Funny thing about that,  there is no "colour" involved. It's not dye like Aluminium anodizing. The colour is from refraction of light in the oxide layer, different thickness, different colour. I did a folder a while back and I have been trying ever since to get the wide sweep of colours like I managed on that.

I'm looking forward to the brass one, I like working with that. But I'm not looking forward to trying stone and the ceramic may not happen. Glass would be THE coolest thing...........<Clarkson> in the world,</Clarkson> but God knows how I'd do that.

hmm, could do Bone rather than Ceramic.

More will be coming along...  just ordered some camel bone and some buffalo horn, I have leather, stainless steel and brass at home, and am researching suitable stone. Should give me plenty to do over the Xmas break.

Very nice!¡!

Carbon  f-i-b-r-e     I'm thinking of doing this to my Swiss Champ.

Did you do the scale work yourself? Was working with the carbon fiber material difficult? Can't wait to see the rest of the formation.............

That G10 looks nice.
I have been thinking of doing some paper micarta with layered colours. If you make up a wavy jig to compress it in you can get that stripy effect on a flat sanded surface.

aww, nuts, Micarta... ???  that's another recruit I have to make  :)
