The Victorinox-Wenger Horn Handles thread
on: December 13, 2012, 01:03:37 AM
The idea came to me thanks to a post from Reinier.
I really love the horn handles in a Swiss knife, and i believe many other members of this forum also love them too.
So let's give them the credit that they deserve with posting some photos of them.
I only have three Swiss knives with horn handles.
A Swisschamp with a old magnifying glass, a old Spartan of 1943 and a old 74mm Cavalier variation.

Marius,

You mentioned over on your alox thread that you had only been collecting SAKs for a year. I'd say it's been a VERY productive year. Great collection!

Karl, your Horn handles knives are superb!
Marius i noticed that your knives haven't the keyring and i also noticed that in your red alox thread.
Why is that?
Basilio, your Wengers are beautiful and i think that they are very rare to find.

Great stuff :D

Have any you actually carried these for a while? I'd be interested to know how the scales hold up to some wear and tear.

I don't have any horn SAKs, but do have a couple of horn handled Sheffield made slippies, and the scales have held up exceptionally well  :tu: A very durable material - good job really considering their purpose in nature  :D :D :D

I have a Mike HORN wenger...   :D :D

One of my nice fixed blades had its horn eaten away by worms, after a few years in storage.. Really sad.

Marius i noticed that your knives haven't the keyring and i also noticed that in your red alox thread.
Why is that?

I routinely remove the ring (and chain or bail) and keep aside (in the respective SAK box usually) to avoid wear between the ring and the scale/liners (I saw this happening in the past). With the exception of the SAKs that have lanyards of course.

That's good - thought it may be brittle for some reason.

Actually my Wenger set is a bit of a cheat; two Commanders rather than a Commander and Traveler. Never have been able to come up with the horn-handled Traveler.

I ordered some of this... Buffalo horn.

and some in Brown,  and some camel bone blanks too, so soon I'll have some horn scaled SAKs of my own.

Some more horn handles. The three tan knives on the right appear to have a horn-like grain structure, but may be an early plastic like celluloid.

I like the spartan   the exposed rivets really set it off!

The exposed rivets in any SAK it's like a magnet to me. :D
I have four of them (no counting the soldier's knives that i have) and i love them all.
I know it's off topic, but i can't resist to take a photo of them all together, so here they are.

Here is a repeat image from SAKWiki, it shows some nice colors in the grain of these horn scales (Classic & Classic SD).

I've done scales with scraps of hardwood on several of my SAKs.

I would love to do some with horn as well.

Where do you all source material like horn and bone from, as well as stuff like G10, micarta, corian, resinwood, etc..???

Just googling over the past few months found lost of different knife supply webstore, but have no idea which is best.
