ok guys...you get the sneak peak of what's to come...sending this off to shapeways to get it 3d printed in plastic first. I am tired of waiting and seeing IF some company makes 'em...I am doing it.

behold...SHEARS FOR A WAVE/CHARGE!

Oh, nice idea. :tu:  What are you looking to be able to cut, paper, card, leather?  Or right up to tin snips?

Let just say I want to make two versions, a PE and a SE shear. BUT I have to make sure the darn things fit first.

I am using some really basic 3d software mostly because I am lazy to install Solidworks, that and I am 4 years out of practice with it. I can't even believe I managed to work in the ramp to engage the blade locks too.

Also, this give me an excuse to put Vic pliers on the outside of a Wave/Charge....who knew!

Lol! I don't know what to call it yet. It's gotta be nautical akin to the Wave. Or charge...cutty sark? Who know.

It's weeks away from being tested but the idea is sound. This will also open up an opportunity to have side cutter MT (other than bob's power cut)

Neat idea.  Just go with some blade steel and it would work out nice and strong.  :D  A belt grinder would be fine for putting an edge on.  I resurface and resharpen SAK scissors that way and they come out nice and sharp.

I'd just go for a simple name.  Jaws!  He swims among the waves, and eats the other fishes... :D

So far Shapeways hasn't sent me an email saying I have an open model or any sidewall issues yet, so this is looking more real by the minute!

I think future attempts will have to be done in stainless, but the cutting and mating surfaces will have to be extruded out, printed and then milled off to ensure a perfect fit.

I also figured out an internal spring loading that you can't see (it's under the pivot point) but the idea is sound, just need to get a spring made...torsion spring with some 90 degree legs sticking out.

Blast, Totfy, who's had experience with the printed SS, apparently it only has a R22-23 rating. Pretty soft. Won't be any good for scissors.

However, I am just curious to see how it fits.

looks pretty nifty, this wouldn't be too hard to CNC with the right setup

I like jaws a lot, but I would eventually like to design a pair of BIG shears to go into the Surge and remove the inside tools. Maybe proper pruning shears.

Piranha and Jaws perhaps?

Moby Dick seems too epic...also it implies it can't be caught :)

If locking pliers is the Crunch, maybe this should be the Chomp  :D

Have you actually ordered the stuff from Shapeways, Eric? I'd imagine it would make a helpful grinding template if nothing else. Also, do you have a plan for the pivot?

Btw, shipped your awl today!

I ordered a set of plastic ones for fitting. Pulled a Spyderco Training move and got them made in polished red plastic :)

I made the handle pivots a smaller hole so I'll drill them out for the perfect fit. Right now the shear pivots is a simple bolt assembly, but I need to source some or make a 1/4" pivot pin.

Also, a torsion spring needs to be made, a round one with two feet sticking out, that should spring load the shears, which is essential when using shears without finger loops. It's either spring load them or design some fold out finger loops in place of the blades.

I imagine these would be a nice companion to a identical plier based MT.

Thanks for getting awl out mate  :tu:

Any chance of salvaging the Paul Chen spring, and embedding that in there? Been a while since I got rid of the handles for mine so I can't remember how thick it was  Failing that, how about a cheapo SOG crosscut ... or even cheaper one of the Taylor Sweaty Bumwipe Cutlery made Toughchips ... the spring is probably the only serviceable part on it  :D

Maybe, I was REALLY hoping for an integral spring load, I have a pair of Master Craft scissor MT's and the spring is embedded around the shear pivot.

I have the design in place, it's a matter of making or finding a spring.

Sorry Eric, I wasn't thinking - the legs need to be offset, whereas those are all pointing the same way

I thought about external springs too, but there isn't much room inside those handles. Unlike the sloppy MP600 where there is OODLES of room :)

Definitely do so 3d print and TEST them. I made some stubby wiss scissors years ago when I made carpet, and threw the cutting angle off and they didn't cut worth a flip. However I kept them faintly stock, and they typically weren't opened to the angle I bent the arms into to make the edges meet when I did the mod.
