Parcel hook
on: December 16, 2012, 08:01:34 PM
I haven't done a search so this may have already have been mentioned or covered but I was thinking that the hook might come in handy for tying skate laces for kids when you have a whole bunch of them to do because nobody else shows up to help and your hands get sore. Thankfully my kid is past that stage, but I just thought of it for some reason.

I agree. It definitely could be replaced with something a little more relevant to today's usage.

Since the hook comes on the same layer as the scissors, it's usefulness is greatly expanded when it comes with the nail file cutout; trim your nails with the scissors and file the rough spots with the hook. I guess the reason Vic doesn't make all the hooks with a file is due to production costs, which is a shame :-\

I wonder what the breaking strength of the hook would be... Ok who has used it during a secret mission to slide down a zip line!  LOL

Vic rates it to 110 kg. Exactly the correct strength for Q to shout "It's only meant for one person!" as 007 sweeps away with some anorexic model.

That is THE best comment in ALL of the "I hate the hook" and " The hook... tool of the Gods" threads that litter this forum.

Well said sir...  well said.

It seems to be 'Lynn's great thread necro day!'

Anyway.

I posted on using the hook to carry a water bottle the other day. I thought that was a nice use.

However, last night, I NEEDED the hook.

So, we have a thing called a 'litter locker'. So, when you scoop a cat's litter box, it goes into this contraption that seals it up. When the litter locker is full, the bag is removed, and we put it into one of those thin plastic grocery bags, to be carried out to the trash. And when it's full, all that clumped kitty litter weighs a LOT. I'm guessing 40 or so pounds. Carrying that much weight by those thin straps feels like it'll cut your fingers off. Worse, I'd taken the garbage can out to the curb for collection in the morning.

I was standing there thinking 'if only there was a more comfortable handle to carry this with'.

Almost within arms reach was my EDC Climber. Hook out, bag hooked, and the heavy bag of cat crap out to the curb to dump in the trash can.

I was shocked that it managed that much weight, but after reading the 110kg limit, I'm less concerned that I was pushing the tool's limits.

So, the parcel hook was actually used pretty much exactly as intended, to carry a heavy 'parcel'. Sure, the parcel was cat crap, but hey, a win is a win, right? :D

The bags that go into the litter lockers come in a 'cartridge', and are kind of expensive. Removing it while not completely used, or cutting it to remove part of it then tying off the end would both waste some/cost more.

Don't blame me, it's my husband's job to deal with the litter box. It's just my job to haul out the trash.  :D

That's one hellacious bump Lynn, nice!  :tu:

While I don't desperately need the hook, things like cat poop make it a sure winner.
