Turns out it may not be the perfect gift light. The high-mode draws so much current that they do not recomment strongly not using it with regular batteries.

The high-mode draws so much current that they do not recomment strongly not using it with regular batteries. Yet another reason not to use the those cursed alkaleaks (alkaline batteries). A ZL is way too good a light to be ruined when (not if) an alkaline battery spills its corrosive guts all over whatever it is in. I'll use them if I really have to, but I strongly recommend that you never leave them for any length of time in anything electronic that you value. The latest duracell "duralock" batteries may be better, time will tell.
I tend to agree about giving "good" lights to non-enthusiasts, but this year I gave away a couple of ZL H51 headlights. However I also gave the lucky recipients 4 eneloops ( and a decent charger), along with strict instructions to never, ever leave alkaline batteries in the lights. No problems so far, so looking good for the moment.
