I'm currently reading Rage by Stephen King. It's a book that is about a school shooting and it's not very popular due to all the school shootings in recent years. King wishes the book never got into print because it follows him everywhere and hits home with to many people. It's done so it's written in first person and gives you the insight on how this student snaps and goes crazy.

Hmmm... is it Clancy or Patterson that has this high variation in writing style from "not literature but pretty decent" to "even the tabloids have more complex sentence structure"?

Just rereading the William Gibson 'Bridge' trilogy - 'All Tomorrows Parties' is my favourite.

Any other Gibson fans out there? He loves his watches and knives!

Just finished Bernard Cornwells "the pagan lord". Great book, like the rest of the warrior chronicles series by him.

I finished reading 'Raising Steam' by Terry Pratchett.

Sadly I have to say, he is loosing it. Both 'Snuff' and 'Raising Steam' are qualitative worse than the books before. I know he is very ill and writes with an assistant. I have the feeling, this assistant is not quite up to the legacy.

I agree there is a noticeable decline in quality of writing in those two books. It is almost as if they were written by someone else. But then again he is suffering from alzheimer's disease and those two books are still better than many books from authors who, presumably, were in possession of fully functioning brains. That makes me respect him that much more.

And while we are at declining quality of sequels, has anyone read the And another thing by Eoin Colfer? It was supposed to be the sixth book in Douglas Adams trilogy of Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy... but at least to me it utterly fails to do that. The main characters are unrecognizable and definitely no longer know where their towels are. Arthur devolves into a complete idiot, Ford Prefect utterly loses his charm, zaphod loses his head, trilian had all of her smarts amputated and digital watches are userped by mobile phones. But I suspect that it should have been obvious that a author of childrens books didn't stand a whelks chance in supernova to pull this off!

I think I feel better now.

Yes, you are right. It is still better than most other fantasy novels. 

And this 'And another Thing' sounds horrible. Why take away the most edifining character marks? Would have been better to let the manuscript rest in peace than to do that!

The difference is the Hunger Games Movies are quite good while the World War Z movie is utter garbage.

The Hunger Games Books - 7
The Hunger Games Movies - 7,5

World War Z Book - 8
World War Z Movie - 4,5 (and that only because of the special effects)

Agreed. It should have never have fallen into Brad Pitts hands. Many behind the scenes clashes and much rumored hollywood drama. Plus Max Brooks wasn't consulted on the script till after the shooting had already begun.

Like most great stories; the book, comic, whatever, lays down the template. No point straying from whats already put before you...yet these "genius" deem it fit to re-tell an already excellent story.

It was entertaining enough, but as far as stories go it was a turd, and even with me being a sci-fi nerd not really worth a second viewing. They should have stuck to the books method of telling of the Zombocalypse. It should have resembled something like a history channel documentary told in segmented flashbacks.

The entire Ultramarine Saga by Graham Mcneill, Deathwatch: Xenos Hunters(compilation of short stories) and Eisenhorn by Dan Abnett. Eisenhorn I've heard is one the most well written 40k books.

As for your quote, I know it's a title of one of the Guant's Ghost books, also written by Dan "The Man" Abnett. But other than that I know nothing.
May have to jump into something with Imperial Guradsman, Space Marines are rather dull characters to be honest.


Next 40k book I really want my get my hands on is The Last Chancers by Gav Thorpe. Pretty much Warhammer meets the Dirty Dozen. Really like that concept for some odd reason...

Eisenhorn is great! 

It's three of the few WH40K books that also deal with the dystopian society and the citizens in it, rather than just battlefield 1, battlefield 2, etc.
And it is a compelling story. I devoured it whole! 
There is also a second trilogy 'Ravenour' (I think of the same quality) and the first novel of the Bequin-Trilogy (which I haven't got yet).

I read some of the Ultramarine books (I think I did not finish it) and I did not see as many squad or chapter encounters as I hoped for, it focusses mainly on the lead character. (Don't want to spoil you more). I started my WH40K readings with the Spae Wolves books (so I might be slightly biased there) and I found the way they introduced the concept of a Space Marine to the reader very good.

I haven't read The Last Chancers    , but Dirty Dozen in Space could also fit to some of the Gaunt's Ghosts novels 

I think you will have a lot of fun with these novels, they are among the best written for Black Library.

@RT, I hope so. Just bought me a bundle of WH40k books. 19 books for $60. All in exceptional condition. Well worth what I spent. I knew I'd get more hours of entertainment from the books then a bundle of knives.

Just began the Ultramarines sage. Decent writing, way better then James Swallow who wrote the Blood Angels saga. He was very wordy without being truly descriptive. A words smith with a gifted vocabulary, to bad it alienates the audience in my opinion. Novel in one hand, dictionary in the other.

I can honestly say I have not voluntarily read a book since High School. I just have a incredibly hard time retaining information from reading anything I am not VERY interested in such as knives or MT's. 90% of my voluntary reading is done on MTO. Thanks for keeping my literate MTO.
