Leatherman Charge ALX with 91mm Victorinox scissors
on: January 05, 2013, 05:38:19 PM

This is by no means a new mod. Andreas did it years ago and Eric did his version of it a few weeks ago. But this is my take on it. I like to do my LM mods in such a way that they are reversible if needed. Andreas cut away the liner lock if I remember correctly :ahhh and Eric bent it so it sits flush. I don't mind pushing it out of the way when closing the scissors. :D I decided to replace the serrated blade on it as I rarely use it anyways.

Worth noting is the scissors aren't locked as the linerlock is about 1,5 mm to short to engage but the back of the scissors sits nicely against the Charge/Wave frame and that's the portion that's needed when working with them.

I wish there were some BO Vic scissors but I like them this way too. D:

Eric drilled the hole to size but as I don't have carbide bits that size and the hole had to be raised a bit I did it with my dremel and some diamond coated bits.

Green circle that has to be drilled.

After drilling. Some filing and polishing was needed. :D

It was a fun project and I can reverse it any time if I decide I need the serrated blade more than I need scissors. I doubt this will happen though. :D

It may have been done before, but it's still pretty cool.
I'm a great fan of "outside the box" mods that use tools in places they were never meant to go and mix-and-match with different brands.

So would it work with the liner lock if you moved the hole a bit, and ground some of the other stop metal so it still stopped on open at the correct spot?  I guess having the scissors non locking isnt a big deal, but it's so tempting to try to make use of that liner lock.   I rarely use the serrated blade too, so it would be a good spot to put scissors.

I think it would. I was wondering the same thing but only after all the moding was done. ;) I'm so close to sacrifying another pair or scissors to try it :D

I am all but convinced to do this to my Wave. Anyhow, great job on a very nifty mod!

It's a great idea, love the 91mm scissors.

Nice job you did too, especially without the easiest tools :tu:

Hmm...liner lock...

It maybe REALLY tight, it won't engage on much. I am also tempted to go ahead on this again...

You may need to raise the hole more, grind the bottom flat to make it work, but I think it's doable.

Edit: raise, not lower.

I hate to tear up a perfectly good Vic, but I like this, since it would also allow swapping in the awl and plier head from a Rebar. Along with my usual Fuse/Kick/Blast long-medium-flat and fully-square phillips driver swap, of course.

I was inspired by this post to put the 91mm Victorinox scissors in my Charge Tti and I've got to say, I'm very happy with the results. I made it so the liner lock now works with the scissors and I replaced the inside scissors with a custom awl. Thanks for the idea!

Very nice. :tu: I still haven't gotten around to doing another pair. Could you maybe post pics of the modified scissors side by side to an unmodified pair so people can see how much metal was removed?

I don't have an unmodified pair of scissors (I'm fairly new to this whole modding thing). I can tell you that I didn't take much off at all. I didn't move the hole at all, just widened it right where it was, then lined up the saw and scissors' holes and marked what needed to be shaved off the scissors. All in all, I'd say I maybe took 1-2 mm off the bottom, just a little more than was needed to make it a little more flat and then maybe 3-4 mm off the back of the scissors.

The liner lock works perfectly, however it locks in two positions due to the scissors being slimmer than the saw blade: The liner lock engages when the scissors are 90 degrees from the tool and you must again press down the liner lock again to get the scissors fully extended. Although the lock is super sturdy in the fully opened position, with just minimal play. I think a little more attention to detail in shaping the bottom could have eliminated this entirely.

I used my dremel tool.
