on: January 06, 2013, 03:44:22 AM
I'm considering a titanium countycomm widgy prybar. An opinions as to whether to go 2" or 3"?
Prices are $13 and $16. +4.95 shipping.

Any strong feelings toward either the bent (regular) or straight prybar?

I've got a 2" and 3" straight bars, what are you going to use it for or put it in?

I don't think they do a titanium straight widgy bar anyway.
I'd go with the 3" version, i've tried both sizes and i found the 2" too short to be useful.
Pictures of most of my work can be found on my Facebook Page.
Also have a look at my Shapeways Shop and SW Torch Shop for 3D printed items.

I like them and have several, but I find them a little too sharp and pokie for pocket carry.

Yup, it would be pocket carry. I don't have a keyring because I don't have a car, my own house, etc.

I would get steel but I worry about the rust. I don't live in a really, really humid environment, or by a lake or anything, so could this be a non issue? Shipping included, titanium is twice the price of steel.

it shouldn't be an issue, I haven't had any problems. If you want you can polish the bar with a dremel wheel, I did mine and i think it looks better that way. :)

I carry mine (4" curved steel) on my keychain, which is hanging in my left front pocket. It gets soaked with sweat in summer and have turned black, however no red rust and the black layer seems to keep it safe from any further corrosions.

My very personal opinion: I'd go for steel. Just use a drop of mineral oil, gun oil or whatever you have handy, and don't worry more about rust. Choosing steel, it would be possible to go for a straight widgy as well, which I think makes it easier to have in a pocket.

I have had rust on one widgy. That one had no oil. I just rubbed off the rust with some steel wool and water (I think), wiped it down with some Ballistol after drying, and it has never had a speck of rust after that.

I also have the 4" Steel Pocket Widgy hanging from a clip in my pocket.  It hasn't rusted and I don't really notice its presence (until I need it).

If you use a fine emery cloth on the steel widgy it polishes up nicely to a more rust resistant finish.

Since when would that be a reason to not have a keyring?

Buy the steel if you plan to ever use it, it'll stand up to actual use; or get the titanium if you just want a shiney piece of scrap to let people know you have to much money to actually do "work" yourself and hire people to do that sort of thing for you.

Yes, a simple "I've had a bad experience with the titanium version" would probably have sufficed.

However, welcome to the forum.

Thank you for the welcome to the forum.

I apologize if I came off a little harsh on my opinion of titanium, I think I may be subjecting myself to reading too many posts involving the metal. It has a place, but I keep seeing it used in manners where other, cheaper metals would be more effective and I feel it's quickly becoming the gold teeth of the keychain/multi-tool world where people are buying things because they're made of titanium rather than they are made well. I'm sure there's a tactical titanium bottle opener out there just selling like hotcakes, and it irritates me to no end.

Again, apologies and thank you for the welcome.

Agreed. I dislike tacticool things, and tend to choose things for utility over anything else. Just about sums me up really...!

I went for the steel and have all three sizes, Pico - 2", Micro - 3" and Pocket - 4". I have wrapped the Pocket in Paracord and it is stowed away in my Skinth Magnum, the Micro is on my key chain and the Pico is on my Wife's key chain.

I f I was pocket carrying I would personally go with the 4" Pocket, just would feel a lot better in my pocket and with the paracord wrapping and lanyard easier to pull out than the 3", you could also paracord wrap the 3" as well?

Here is the 4" Pocket wrapped

Looks good. :)  What's the Cold Steel knife?  Looks small but handy. :tu:

I carry the 2" bar on my keychain and it doesn't seem to interfere with anything. The longer the prybar though, the more useful, so carry the longest you can tolerate on your keys...

It is a Cold Steel Micro Recon 1, a very nice little Key Chain knife, very sharp and good back up to my Ontario Rat M2, and goes well with the CC Micro 3" Pry Bar..

I got a paint can opener from home depot for free.  And I carry it in my wallet. I also have a secondary thing that I could use as a prybar in my wallet.  One of those chinese ebay survival 1 piece tools that you get for less than a dollar each with free shipping.

The benefit is they are cheap so you won't hesitate to mash on them if you need it and they work!

I actually bought the 3 inch straight steel pry bar, to give this thread some closure. It goes well with my Wave and Spyderco Manbug. Oh, and EndTimes discontinued the 3 inch soon after.
