So has anyone else got any recommendations for cheap, but effective outdoor/camping gear

See the Outdoor Idiots thread for a home-made, effective, two-man tarp and groundcloth combo that is very cheap indeed.  Maybe 10 to 15 bucks, depending on where you buy materials.

You probably can't find any two-man shelter that's actually worth a damn any cheaper than that.
