You've seriously never had Spam?

Hmmmm.... how to describe it...

First, it's about 50% salt, by volume. Then, 25% grease. The remaining 25% is a not completely terrible amalgam of probably bovine bits. As horrible as this might sound, it's actually pretty good if you dice it, fry it, and mix with eggs. It's not ham, but bologna isn't... whatever animal it claims to be from either.

A kid I knew once asked me to make Spam for them. We had fried Spam, topped with Velveeta cheese, on a toasted bagel. The sodium levels were probably very nearly lethal.

The GOOD side is that by volume, it's VERY high in calories. Spam might taste like crap in your kitchen, but on a mountain trail, fried up in the morning, it's pretty awesome (and you sweated out a ton of salt the day before anyway). It has an insane shelf life. As a food for people into 'prepping', it's pretty awesome, because there aren't that many foods with this high of fat content that are shelf stable for this long. Fat might be bad now, but in times of real scarcity, fat is vital.

Hawaiians make an entire cuisine of it. They make sushi with it. Okay, I guess it's technically musubi... Like I'd know the difference...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_musubi

If you can stand potted meat, or corned beef in cans, or vienna sausages in cans, or pickled hot dogs, you can eat spam.

I guess it's pretty much just like the cheapest version of ham lunchmeat you could imagine.

Maybe you have and you don't know it? We have like two or thre different spam brands here (Zwan, Tulip, etc.) none of which identifies as "spam" per se. Below is a pic of the most iconic among them. Good stuff! :tu:  :D

Accept NO substitutes!  :D

EDIT: I occasionally buy the cheap 'luncheon meat' cans from ALDIs. Virtually the same as Spam. Same salt, same grease, same unidentifiable bits of something that was probably once an animal.

Edit to the edit: I said 'bovine' in the post above, and meant 'porcine'. I think I got caught up in alliteration.

Actually, I bought a can of Spam a couple weeks ago, because I'd never actually eaten either (that I know of ).

I took it to work as my lunch.   :)

If you ignore the odd gelled goo on the edges (which isn't too bad flavor-wise), it was fine.  As Lynn said, it's salty though.

I could see it working extremely well diced into scambled eggs with some peppers.

That's awesome.

Mr. Whippy... YES. Fry it first in the pan, then use the grease from it to cook your eggs and mix them together. It's really good like that.

And as for the gelled goo... gelatin from connective tissue and cartilage. You get that from the drippings of any meat. It grosses some people out. it doesn't bother me.

Fixed.  ;)

I love Spam.  There are friends of mine who used to look at me like I was crazy for eating it (amongst other reasons they'd look at me like I was crazy I suppose...) but after trying it fried up with some eggs and cheese on a nice hard roll, they're converts.  :)  A lot of times I'll dice it up, fry it, and mix it in with macaroni and cheese.  In a pinch, it's not bad cold with some mustard on a sandwich either.  :tu:

I'm not a great fan of Spam (though I admit it's been years since I tried it), but canned Corned Beef however is just fantastic.

In the interests of mankind, I hereby ressurect this zombie thread to give out some new ideas for Spam recipes:

Finely dice your Spam, and mix it into hash browns with onions and peppers.  Fry for yumminess.

Spam tacos.

Thick cut Spam (about the width of a deck of cards) dusted with a dry rub and grilled to perfection.  Careful flipping, use a wide spatula.

Smoked Spam.

Cube the Spam, and place it onto kabobs between favorite veggies.

Cut the Spam into strips, fry, and serve Spam gyros with tzatziki, onions and tomatoes on a pita.

These are some stuff I have done with Spam.  Embrace the wholesome goodness that is potted meat.

The world belongs to the funkiest.

The world belongs to the funkiest.

I was raised with luncheon meat, pork meat and corned beef, mainly the ZWAN or other Danish brands of it. I was conditioned to love it, anyway. I make a spaghetti sauce out of either (to have some variety).
A little olive oil in the pan with 1 garlic and 2-3 onions and allspice, then the ZWAN, wine, then tomato sauce (canned) and some more spices (like dried chilli and/or paprika) and when its almost ready crushed wallnuts. I'll try cashiews next time.

With all tose off topic threads and posts here, I wonder if a thread about favourite cold cuts (and, why not, cheeses, delikatessen in general) would fit in MTO. We have coffee, cooked food and many others. We converted a SPAM thread to a thread about SPAM. We are not one-dimensional people, hobby fundamentalists, "serious" passtimers, monomaniacs. We are the MTO members. We need our tools and knives MULTI, to use them in a multitude of occassions. That means that we like a lot of stuff we use our SAKs and MTs on and another lot we can't use them on. Damn all these self-opening cans and packs, where are those good old days that you couldn't survive without the archetypical multi-can opener or the more dressy and luxurius upgrades of it, SAKs and Multis?

Campbell's Soup with Can Opener, 1962, Andy Warhol, casein and pencil on linen, Ebsworth Collection

I would start not with SPAM, but with Pick Szeged Salami
