I actually am one of the few that can't wait for this to come out.  I know visually it will be amazing, and I really have my fingers crossed for the story.

On the plus side - JJ Abrams

On the negative side - disney

Trailer looks good, but if they had failed to make it look good in the trailer it's over before it's begun!

It would be nice to see a decent star wars film apart from ESB and the non ewok bits of RotJ for a change.

I'm concerned about JJ Abrams directing.  Yes he did an excellent job with Star Trek and Avengers, but there are important differences.  In Avengers, there was no real, established media other than comics to mess up, and movies and comics are usually very different.  In Star Trek every geek in the audience breathed a sigh of relief as soon as Spock pointed out that this was an alternate timeline, an accepted concept in the world of Star Trek.

In Star Wars there is a very well established universe, with no alternate universes, no time travel, and an amazing expanded universe that George Lucas insisted all interact logically with the established continuity.  Now there's no Lucas and a director famous for going his own way with things.

But, after seeing the trailer, I am cautiously optimistic.  Very cautious, but still optimistic.

Lets face it - he can't mess it up any more than it already has been!

If I was George Lucas I'd give Peter Jackson whatever he wanted to direct all 3 new ones.

Lucas has no more say in it.  It's all under the direct control and iron fist of Mousecorp Incorporated.

And, I might have agreed with Peter Jackson had I not seen or been aware of any of the Hobbit movies.

I can't disagree with you there, but if you watch them as purely fantasy films and forget all about the hobbit, it makes it easier. The new one has Trebuchet ogres and a battle elk! They have to count for something.

You see where I'm coming from though- I really don't need to see a side story with Yoda's secret affair with Paris Hilton and the scandal it caused amongst the remainder of the Jedi Council which is what inevitably led to Yoda's dismissal and exile to Dagobah.

I've read a TON of Star Wars novels, most (if not all  ) had three books per, and I think all of them could be made into pretty damn good movies.  I'd like to see movies more dedicated to the adventures of Hans, as he's been on some pretty interesting adventures.

yup, seen a number of these and variants.

some people nitpicking that the hilt would not stop a lightsaber, but imho due to how it is emitted it would be impossible to have it all lightsaber... many with multiple ridiculous branches like this...

Ääääh, what?  :o ???

I see absolutly no plus in JarJar Abrams - he already ruined Star Trek (made a nice SF-action-movie, but ruined "Star Trek").

He accompaniyed with Disney, the ultimate dark side - they can do what the Emperor wasn´t able to.
Have fun.

Michael

And since that has changed I stopped watching Star Wars... Mind you, its not about that detail in particular, that detail is symptomatic for the changes made...

Hmm, good question.  The problem is, I'm HORRIBLE with book names, and they're all packed away now.

I don't think any of the ones I read were really all that dark though.  Some darker than the movies, but most were pretty equal.  Let me do some Google fu, and see what I can come up with.

Ok, I'll list the ones I can remember here, and hopefully I'll find most of them.

The Jedi Academy trilogy  (one of my favourite sets!)
The Han Solo Trilogy
The Han Solo Adventures
The Adventures of Lando Calrissian
Thrawn trilogy
The Corellian Trilogy
The New Rebellion
Planet of Twilight

I know there's more, but I can't figure out which ones now.

It would have been cool if they had made movies out of the Dark Empire graphic novels.

Nothing from the New Jeri Order books. Chewbacca dies in the first one.

I too have my concerns, but they are not a reflection of the abilities of Abrams, the writers, the actors, or even of MouseCorp .... it's basically because I'm not a kid anymore and can't be as easily wowed as I could when the original trilogy hapenned. I fell in love with the original films while I was between the ages of 4 and 10, and ... well ... my approach to films in general has changed a bit since then  :D

I will say however, that I have the original pre-smurfed up versions of the original trilogy on DVD, and won't watch the later versions that got re-Lucased. I am actually really glad that he's not directly involved in this next phase. I did like Abrams' take on Star Trek too actually, it was true enough to the old ways, but fresh enough to not just be a clone (like the Hobbit after LOTR's success), and add something a bit "new" to the mix. I hope he does this with the Star Wars film, but in reality I have to approach this as being something entirely new (much like a new James Bond era) otherwise I'll be pretty much guaranteed to be disappointed

If you really love the unrelucasized versions I cannot recommend enough the DESPECIALIZED version floating around the net. They've compiled from a number of sources including bluray, laserdisc, and more, cleaned it up but kept it true to the same old movie, however much higher quality. The entire original trilogy is out there.

That might be what I've got Micah to be honest. I'm pretty sure it was a remastered copy of the originals just before they started adding all the silly crap. Actually, thinking about it, it prob won't be HD though ... not that it matters a bugger to me anyway as I don't have anything to watch HD on  :D No telly, a modest laptop, and a desktop PC with a maximum 1440 x 900 display  :D

I'm REALLY on the fence about the new Star Wars stuff. I want so desperately to WANT to be excited, but I'm not.

I hate to say it...

Maybe I'm...

Maybe I'm over Star Wars?

Then again, 'Star Wars: Rebels' isn't completely terrible. So....
