That would have been one hell of a cool family car!

Oh it was, perfect seating for "only" four, plenty of room for shopping, heck if something broke down all you needed was a screwdriver or pliers to get it going..

Sweet!  Take what you can get!  I hope the price isn't too painful.

Not painful at all. $500 :D

Nice!  You'd pay that (and more!) for seats alone!

derekmac: what sort of transmission do you have? Is it a double clutch auto or something?
I'm just amazed you managed to kill one and it's a whole transmission, torque converter autos are usually pretty forgiving and manuals it's simple to change the clutch without having to touch the gearbox.

Do you do much towing?

If it's any consolation, my Defender has what is knows as the "death rattle" where the clutch springs break.

It's just a regular auto, that's controlled by the computer. Chrysler has a history of having transmission problems though.

It's not really the whole transmission gone, but a valve body inside. When that went though, it caused it to slip really bad, and there was a ton of clutch material when I dropped the pan.

I'm getting the parts Jeep today, as it's cheaper than a rebuild. If it still doesn't work right after getting that trans swapped into mine, I'll still be able to sell parts off if it to recoup what I paid for it.

Honestly that sounds exactly like what happened to mine, they said when they pulled it out the case was full of metal shavings and bits and pieces

When they finished they forgot to reset the computer so the truck drove itself at 20mph up hill with no throttle input....
I'm a total legend..... in my own mind- Herley

The parts rig is now at my parents place (wife wouldn't let me use our garage :( , something about wanting a warm clear car to load the kids in), but I'm too damn sick to start working on it.

The guy said the engine was seized, and I'm hoping not completly as it'll make getting all the torque converter bolts out interesting.

Well I haven't had a chance to get at the transmission, but I did do a survey, and it's not going to be a fun job!  I'll pull the one from the parts rig, but no way in hell am I going to pull mine and install this one.  If I had a hoist, it wouldn't be so bad, but lying on the floor, it's just too much of a job for that.

Today I swapped over a bunch of stuff from my parts Jeep though.  None of these are essential items, but ones that I want in mine.
  • Gauge Cluster (white gauges instead of black)
  • Light Sensor (for auto headlights)
  • Auto Headlight Stalk
  • Overhead Console (has garage door buttons)
  • Heated Seat Switches
  • Auto dimming Rear View Mirror

Took a picture of it. :D

I haven't swapped the transmission yet, but the one in the parts Jeep is just about ready to come out.  With the great generosity here, I was able to get a new starter, and can drive it as is now.  It's not perfect, but so far the trans is holding up.

Good to hear you are still mobile!  This has been a heck of a season to be without a 4x4!

You got that friggin right it has been!  I can't wait to get the other trans in it though so I don't have to worry about it.  I think I will eventually rebuild this one also.  Doesn't hurt to have a spare!! LOL

So I've been farting with the idea of getting a few more inches out of the Jeep (no, that's not what she said  :twak: ), and as of now, I have a plan in progress.

I bought a set of Rough Country 2.5" JK lift springs for a whopping total of $20 to try out.  Now, it is not really documented at all of guys doing this with Grands, so I'm one of few that has tried it.

I put the back springs in, on top of my 2" spacers, but had to discard the lower spring isolator as the coil was tighter, and wouldn't fit over it.  Here's a before/after pic.

It gave me a decent lift, and I'm now sitting about 3" higher over stock, which is as high as I can go without needing to change out other parts.

I'm going to tackle the front this weekend hopefully, and I hope to gain a couple of inches up there too. :)

Leave the front the way it is- it looks like a 50's hot rod!  :D

You know why the old hot rods were lower in the front than in the back right?  Because you always go faster when you are going downhill!  :D

To be more specific, this exact colour, since it'll be the actual paint used on them.
