That is a great machine!

People cam talk about modern cars and how reliable they are, but there won't be any 2015 Honda Civics still running in 50-60 years!

Thx!!!  You need to find one one of these....

The first Willys Jeep factory in Canada was opened in 1959, although Ford Canada had previously built military Jeeps under an agreement with Willys and the Canadian military. According to Canadian author David Dunlop, 2,140 M-38 CDN Jeeps were built by Ford in 1952, and over 1,000 M-38A1's in 1953.

Mine's an M38A1 of undetermined pedigree/year.   Found the serial number plate but it has about 5 coats of paint over it.     My buddy's had it for 15 years and hasn't found the paperwork yet.

At least that's not as fugly as the early defender prototypes. Which have both been scrapped so I was told by a dealer.

That's good news.  When it comes to the timeless designs like the Wrangler and Defender they need to just make minor tweaks and keep the personality intact.  You know, like they do with the higher end models, like the Range Rover or Grand Cherokee, which only change slightly from generation to generation, and are still recognizable.

Those Defender concepts looked like they were designed by Posh Spice, and we already have the Evoque for that segment of the market.

This Wrangler concept looks like they are trying to tie in the design with the Uber hideous Renegades.

If you have an iconic brand and you want to tie in other models, why not make the other models look like the icon rather than make the icon look like it was designed by this guy:

Yeah, they do that....

The nice thing about an old one like yours is that it doesn't require a lot of fancy accessories to repair or replace- no heated seats, no air conditioning, no fancy stereo system etc.

And, being a military vehicle, it is made to have pretty well any parts you can find or scrounge fit into it.

Most people listen to cliches like "they do not make them like they used to" and assume that these old cars you find, in pristine condition, happen to be in that condition naturally.

I recently sold what is widely considered to be the most robust/best built/reliable and so on car of all time, with the most reliable engine in, as well; the W123 Mercedes, with the workhorse 2.4.D engine.Typical taxi all over the world. Mine was a registered classic car too.

Yes it worked fine, even though it was built 40 years ago, BUT, it did require maintenance, including changes of various transmission/axle parts, injectors. an engine rebuild at some time and lots of minor things, like oil sealants on the break system, break pads, various other seals and bits and pieces. I sold it for OK money as i was not using it.

For a common car like that (good parts availability) the maintenance cost per year, with very little driving was several hundred euros.
A newer, lets say 10 year old Japanese car with a lot of usage costs me about 150 and a 30 year old off-roader (ex-UN vehicle, so a real military vehicle, which is a term that seems to make people moist, even though it does not really mean anything in most cases)which sees a lot of use about the same (but it had had transmission/axle repairs in the past).

I am sure that if I was spending 400 or 600 Euro on any car, per year it would work OK, irrespective of whether it fitted the cliche I posted at the beginning.

Bottom line is, do not assume that an old car, with a good reputation will work all the time, with no expensive maintenance needed. Even one in pristine condition will need some cash input, to stay good.

   Want to do the minimum amount to it. Ordered a couple of flat black hood latches, an inline fuel filter and a rattle can of flat OD paint for the hood latches and touch ups.  I just want it to run and not to sit on seat springs. A sheet of plywood and several surplus blankets for the seats are probably next.

The Compass has always been a less than serious Jeep model, and with this model they are illustrating their commitment to going from icon to mediocrity.

In my opinion they shouldn't build any Jeep models other than trail rated models.  If you're going to buy something that's only 2 wheel drive or all wheel drive without a true low range then you might as well buy a mini-van.  Playing with the styling is busy work for the designers and doesn't involve the engineers at all and styling doesn't do anything to improve the function of the vehicles.  What they need to work on is making a "go anywhere" vehicle that gets 30 miles per gallon and can haul all of your gear.

Boy wouldn't that be nice?

As I see it, Jeep is really missing the boat here.  Imagine an extended range hybrid electric Jeep?  Four small electric drive wheels, and a small engine/generator for extra power when needed, or simply to keep the electric powerplant charged.  That would give the off road guys the torque they want, and you could select which wheels got the power, how much and when.

Make it as tough as a regular Jeep Wrangler and it would make everyone happy.
