Well I spent awhile cutting out Ti blanks for 58 mods the other day and figured I'd like to try texturing one.   It turned out fine, but not the smoothest finish.  I really need flood coolant and to play with the speeds to see what works best.  I'll still build this into a Ti rambler to see how it looks though as the front scale.

Its very grippy thats for sure.   Looks a little better in person since its a pretty small part.

I'm finalizing a Ti 58 today that had some options I havent done before.  One was the Ti anodized liners.

The other was to have the awl from a 91mm replace the cuticle pusher / ruler layer.

The awl actually fits really well.  I filled the original 2.5mm hole with brass and re-drilled a 1/16th inch hole for the right spot for a 58mm hole.  In this super up close pic you can see what I mean.

This is just a test setup to see if the awl works and it does.  Snap is perfect.  The only other thing it needed was a very very did I say very, tiny washer that is 0.010" thick.  That was not fun to make.  I drilled a 1/16th inch hole in some sheet stock, and then by hand and with needle nose pliers turned it into a round washer.

The Ti scales for this one also spent the night in my vibratory tumbler so they are a matte grey color now.  More pics later today when I do the assembly.

Cheers  :salute:

WOW... just did something similar... since I couldn't find the cotton picker/orange peeler I added the awl from a 91mm

and here you can see the tiny brass washer...

I didn't round the tang or filled the original hole with brass.  Great work Syph... :)

Here she is all done now.  The liners look pretty sweet on the finished SAK.  :D  I tumbled the scales in ceramic pyramids for a day and they have a light matte gray look to them.

I had a request to merge the older wide USB layer into a cellidor minichamp.  It worked out fine, but of course a litte on the wide side.  :D

Great work with the awl.

Have you tried putting the small knife from a 91mm into the 58mm frame, and so being able to take out the two blades currently used, which I always thought were a bit weedy and too similar to need both of them.

Yes a small blade will fit.  I started to add that, then realized it can fit a longer blade than the small one, so I started cutting down a large blade to see if I can fit that in.  I looks like it can work and is the way to have the largest knife on a 58 that is still sturdy and practical.  Too many projects to finish at once but its on the list of things to try when I have time.

Well it's been awhile since Ive done some 58mm work, but I'm back to tackling a Ti rambler with tweezers today.

So far I got the scales and liner roughed out and the tweezer slot milled on the back scale.

This rambler will have a polished finish and it was already bugging me thinking that I have to have the tweezers on there with the plastic bit on there.  Im just not a fan of plastic at all if it can be avoided.

So Im doing a bit of an experiment on this. I cut off the plastic bit of the tweezers and used some 1/16 brass rod to rivet a chunk of brass on there.  It's very rough right now, but if I shape it once inserted into the scale, then sand and polish the brass I think it should look pretty nice.  Well thats the hope anyhow.   ;)

I'll post final build pics tomorrow.

Cheers :D

The plastic itself don't bug me. Now, the grey color against a non grey color is what relly ticks me off.

Anyhow, it may be rough but it already looks better then the grey plastic. Fantastic work syr!!!

Very pretty.

There is no liner underneath the scale with the tweezers?

It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

No liner needed, fits smooth with the springs being the backing.

The awl on the 58mm is very nice. The other 'big' tool I would like to see on there are the 'small' knife blades of the 91mm/93mm SAKs, e.g. the spearpoint (if that is what it is called), electrician's blade, etc.

I have always disliked the puny looking knife blades of the 58mm models, one of the reasons I couldn't bring myself to use one.

I think it was you that had mentioned that before about fitting a small blade.  It does indeed fit, just needs lots of grinding.  I shaped one and drilled a pivot hole, it just never made it only a build yet.  I actually used a full size 91mm blade and cut it down as it ended up being a big longer than a standard small blade.

Did the pliers/MiniGrip project make it back into the workshop?

One 58mm mod I'd like to try on or see attempted would be adding a CT bit driver. Maybe something like a slide out/flip out into a T-handle. I'm not sure if it's terribly feasible to do, but it's a thought that's been rattling around in my grape for a while.

The pliers idea is for sure possible, I just tried to over engineer the keep closed mechanism.  If I made that part more simple the actual adding of the pliers to a 58mm is for sure possible.

There is a smaller one?!  Its a neat little folder, seems like the blade should fit just right on the 58mm frame.  Its fun to try new things!
