My first mod.... found MTO a few years ago and got enthused by the clever things happening here :D

I called it the "Carver". It was meant to be for whittling and such, and had tools rescued and remodelled for other SAKs. I never got round to taking more pics after the final work was done - more tool polishing, sanding and shaping etc, but here it is anyway:

Some real beauties here!  :tu: Wood isn't the best handle material speaking from hygiene, strength or durability, but it's still one of my favourites, and I certainly prefer it over bone or horn.

Seen some nice wood SAKs today while looking to see if anyone had tried a leather or leather layered scale, even so far as reptile-scale hide covered then ran across these lovely photos.

This piece of Brown Mallee burl has some pretty heavy cracking and tended to fall to bits when cut small enough for SAK scales. So I tried a pair with gluing the wood together down the middle to help it hold together.
Now I can't decide if it looks good or looks like offcuts glued together

Looks almost leaf-like. Especially in photo #3. Too bad there wasn't a wood that veined out and looked more like a leaf without breaking up.
Your knife does look okay, least photos from the photographic viewpoint. Though the near straight lines ... Is that how it split, or did you take the wood down and glue them together?

Does look interesting though.  :D  Dad used to cut and polish rocks. Wonder if anyone tried to make scales from rocks? Maybe the bug is loose and someone with lapidary equipment could start a new topic.  :tu:

the worst cracks are on the corkscrew side, you can see three of them in photo 4. those go right through and have been glued together. I cut 2 pieces of wood in half lengthways and glued a cracked and non cracked half together for each side, that centre glueline is the cut. You can see the other cracking along the piece next to the openers.

Actually it's growing on me... plenty of character.

I have been looking around trying to figure out how to do some stone scales for a recruit. Looking at granite or marble floor tiles but they are too thick, maybe marble wall tiles.
