Speaking of wood...  for some reason I bought these today

Highly figured Olive wood pen blanks A1++ grade (second's)

They are big enough to get 2 knives worth of scales (4) from each blank.
or possibly 5 sets of 58mm scales each.

Including postage it was $40 for the lot because they are seconds. Still should be able to get a bunch of scales out of them.

Should keep me busy for a while.

Was thinking once about taking a wood scale and put a round dip in it from the liner side, with a small hole protruding out the scale side. Then glue a small cabo stone on the inside. The scale would be the frame for a polished stone. Dad had a bunch of stones here, some opals, but could not find them. Think a cousin ran off with them during the move, so the idea got hosed.
The stone would act as an inlay so to speak, or logo. One could probably incorporate something like that with attractive hard woods and make a name for themselves. Australia has a lot of opal mines don't they?  :D

Could not find any decent lapidary rock slabs online, but you'd need a decent setup to cut and polish them. But I do see others thought of the stones scales too.

Yeah, we is butt men after all.  :D

Would like to see them jaws too if you can get a shot of them laying sideways with the jaws open. Wonder if Wenger & Victorinox pliers have changed much throughout the years? Also curious as to the the difference between the two company pliers are - past the slip joint.

A used Spartan getting some new walnut scales put on. Have plans on sending this to a relative who is struggling. Hope this will make her day brighter.  :D Still have to tackle a lanyard for it.

Yes, it is the Spartan you sent. And the wood scales came from WoodMan. Figured if it would help make another person's day brighter. Had plans on sending a note with it to explain where the knife and walnut scales came from, to give it some lore.

The wood scales I had made came loose on one side, so went ahead and removed them. Put on those laser-cut walnut scales instead. Was curious as to how they would feel, and they snapped right on!

Bit of lore for the gift. At one point in time I was adopted within mom's side of the family. In my early 20's had met my 3 half-sisters. Had tried to stay in contact but we didn't have email back then, and them girls were wild. :D
Last winter their mom, my biological mother, passed on. Through a lot of searching had found where she was laid to rest. Needless to say the known relatives were all but not helpful. So.. contacted the cemetery, left my personal info with them, and asked them to give that to my half-sisters (with explanation).

Earlier this year was contacted by two of them via cell phone. Hard to recap 30+ years in an hour's of talking. Two have facebook, the middle & youngest. The middle gal, Sonya, was looking over my knife projects and new attempts at lanyards. She actually like them.
Though I told her of this forum, and of the many gifted individuals here, she says she likes them cause they were made by her big brother. That sort of hit home. She's going through a rough time of it too. Between that and reading here in the MTO forums how one got their first SAK through a relative, an idea was borne.  :D

So, to wrap this up, I wanted to give her something to remember me by through the years. With the help of your Spartan, and WoodMan's scales, and a lanyard I have yet to tackle, felt it would be a good gesture to send her something she could cherish through the years - maybe even pass on to one of her children.  :D

Swisschamp with Cambara hardwood scales. The Swiss cross is engraved and has one layer of 24ct gold leaf and is outlined with black acrylic paint. Not the most beautiful, but it took me forever to finish...

I really need to get off my butt and sell some of these...  but it does take a while to build up a nice oil finish.

A couple sellers over here in Taiwan seem to have the 03 in stock.  I have been eyeing them but didn't realize they are actually much bigger than the stock wengers.  Think I will have to pick one up!  Want me to make some inquiries on your part?

NO NO NO ... the Wood 03 are the same size !!!

I did finally manage to track one down, and they ARE 85mm as per standard (I need to get a pic of my Traveller line up taken to show it alongside the Evowood  :D )

The knife that lowtech showed there appears to be an EKA Swede 90  ;)
